Hi everyone,
I am currently reading the ITIL V3.0 foundation. In the chapter
of 'Service Strategy', there is a concept of 'Closed loop control
system' of Service Management that has following steps:
1. Develops and maintains service assets
2. Understands the performance potential of customer assets
3. Maps service assets to customer assets through service
4. Designs, develops, and operates suitable services
5. Extracts service potential from service assets
6. Converts service potential into performance potential
7. Converts demand from customer assets into workload for service
assets
8. Reduces risks for the customer
9. Controls cost of providing services
In this model, point 2 & 3 are very confusing. How can we understand
the performance potential of customer assets. I understand assets
are resources and capabilities. But am unable to understand how can
we identify and map our service assets??
Any guidance will be highly appreciated.

You're not the first person to be confused about something in the ITIL books! I'm more than happy to provide an answer to your question, but first, I'd like to understand a little more about your goals.
Are you seeking the Foundation certificate at this time, or are you working towards one of the higher-level certifications?
The reason I ask is because we could spend a lot of time here talking about the answer to this question without moving you any closer to your current goal.
If you are seeking the Foundation certificate, I'd like to suggest that reading through the 5 ITIL version 3.0 books is not the best method to study for the exam. You're not required to understand ITIL at that level to earn the Foundation certificate, and you will likely spend too much time focusing on questions like this, taking you away from your real goal.
Please let me know the result you're aiming to achieve, and I will answer accordingly.
Thanks,
MS
