Keyboard problems with terminal emulator...

tdeantdean Member Posts: 520
hi guys... hooked up my modest lab last night and im using tera term and secure crt to connect. problem is, when i type commands, the keys seems to type whatever they want some of the time. i know there was a setting for this, but i cant remember what... anyone know what im talkin about? i have it set as vt100 right now.

hopefully CCNA by years end! i sure like this stuff better than the MS, but unfortunately i think thats what will be getting me my next job.

Look at what your serial connection is set at on Tera Term.

    Should be:
    Speed: 9600
    Data: 8 bits
    Stop bits: 1
    Parity: None
    Flow Control: XON/XOFF

    VT100 should be fine.

and you should see normal text.

    that w6n't be y64r ter05na3 sett5ngs then. Y64 w643d 14st get e5th ... ahhhh think I sussed it....

    That should have read
That won't be your terminal settings then. You would get either nothing or gibberish.

I am on a laptop and you can ctrl-alt fn and many keys do odd things like in the first line of this post. Wonder if you're keyboard is doing something similar.

Check it out in notepad and see what happens. OR use Putty ;)

same thing with putty. i wonder if its a driver issue. i am on win7 x64 and i am using a usb to serial connector with the vista driver. maybe i'll set up a virtual xp machine on here and see how that goes.

is there another way to connect to a router other than serial/usb? i have a cross over cable, can i connect that to the console port and an unused nic?

    this is terrible.

Terminal is always confusing to those that have never experienced it before. I was big on TNCs back when I spent more time on Packet and A.P.R.S. Some day I will be more involved in Amateur Radio again.

Once you learn how to use it once you will have it down. It is down right frustrating at times.

ugh... thats the truth. this machine is x64, although the vm i set up was as x86, the underlying hardware was not. my machine upstairs is x86 and it works fine. im returning the usb to serial cable and getting something that is proven on win7 x64. thanks for the replies...
