Is it me or is anyone else finding it very difficult to remember the OSI model.

Exactly. Have had that remembererd since I took a Cisco class during high school. Probably because I love pizza.

3. Not - Network
4. Throw - Transport
5. Sausage - Session
6. Pizza - Presentation

B1 (bomber) | bits layer 1
F2 (KB bios key sometimes) | frames layer 2
P3 (Intel processor) | Packets layer 3
S4 (audi sports car) | segments layer 4
D5 -- who know its all data from here down.Work in progress: picking up Postgres, elastisearch, redis, Cloudera, & AWS.
Next up: eventually the RHCE and to start blogging again.

quinnyfly Member Posts: 243 ■■■□□□□□□□I noticed that another thread cited what people doing the Network+ had the most difficulty with, seemingly many reported that knowing and remembering the OSI (Open Systems Interconnection) was one of the biggest hurdles. Because it is a conceptual model and you don't necessarily see it in action, you no doubt have to build an image in your mind of what it is actually doing at various stages of communication. To help others and especially those undertaking the Network + I have compiled a simple table that elicits the main functions of the OSI. There are 7 layers to the OSI and the Data Link layer (layer 2) incorporates two sub-layers which you should know for the exam. These two layers are the LLC (Logical Link Control) and the MAC (Media Access Control).
First of all, using the tried and tested mneumonic going down through the model <before transmission> it is easily remembered like this:
All .............................................Application layer
People........................................Presentation layer
Seem.........................................Session layer
To..............................................Transport layer
Need..........................................Network layer
Data...........................................Data link layer
Processing...................................Physical layer
Network packets are assembled and data is encapsulated as it travels down throuhg the model before transmission across the medium. They are then decapsulated upon arrival at the destination.
Once the packet leaves the transmission source it is sent to the destination in the form of bits <ones and zeros> to then be reassembled at the receiving end as it goes up through the model in the reverse order.
Going up through the model remember this mneumonic:
Please........................................Physical Layer
Do.............................................Data Link Layer
Not............................................Network Layer
Throw........................................Transport
Sausage.....................................Session Layer
Pizza..........................................Presentation
Away.........................................Application

Another item of interest for the Net+ exam was the difficulty people have remembering the cable specs and seeds, connectors etc.
I often table my charts in ascending order for easy memory recall during the exam, below details the cable tables I made for the exam.
Cable Specs: Cable Specs.pdf
Network Cabling:
Many people aslo reported trouble remembering the ports and protocols, again to help out below is my ports and protocols table set out in ascending order.

It is my hope that those new to networking or the network+ exam may find this information useful, please feel free to print save and print out the above tables. The Wings of Technology
