Once you have a good handle on the job, start looking for technologies you can learn more about to keep on moving up.CISSP | CCNA:R&S/Security | MCSA 2003 | A+ S+ | VCP6-DTM | CCA-V CCP-V -

Pretty much. Your doing way more technical Stuff in Help Desk then you are as a Desktop Technician one. As a Desktop Technician 1, I was drilling computers into desks, and setting out equipment. I say it's a big step for me. -

Interesting. I've never heard of that before.

You know, I think our Help Desk is above Desktop Support. They do physical set ups and have admin rights to pc's, but overall we have access to way more systems and I'm pretty sure we get paid more.
That's why I asked the question to the OP, I was wondering if other people were set up like this.Currently Working On

This isn't really how it usually is, but it should be. Your help desk is your face of IT. The image they leave on the user sumarizes your entire IT operations so it better be a good one.
Our desktop team is outsourced to another company, but the help desk is made up of employees. Two of them were even "promoted" from desktop support (aka offered jobs as employees and not as contractors) and they jumped at the chance.Decide what to be and go be it. -

You'll love the people there, and you'll love supporting the systems, ticketing, application and even basic network and server support for 5 major hospitals and a ton of smaller clients..
You're in for a fun ride! -

Same here.
We get paid more than desktop support and can often work from home, and have access to more systems, they do the more physical stuff and have admin rights to the PCs. One or two people that used to do desktop support moved to the helpdesk.
That said we do more work, having to constantly take calls and whatnot.
Guess it just depends on the company.
In any case congrats, OP.
