GSEC or GCIH - easier for a beginner and goes over the basics.

The GSE. There are only about 50 individuals currently certified in the world.
Practically speaking though, it depends on what your goals are and where you're at in your career / skill level.

The GIAC certifications associated with the SANS 300- or 400-level training classes are typically where one starts. These would be the GSIF, GSEC, and GCFE. There are also many good SANS courses at the 400 level that do not have corresponding GIAC certifications.

I would recommend the GSEC for a beginner. I have coworkers who have done the GSIF, and I can say that it appears to be Sec+ level material, but at SANS prices. So unless your employer is paying for this, I would go for GSEC of GCIH.

The decision as to which GIAC cert to pursue is ultimately up to you. If you're willing to spend ~$4000 to get certified, make sure you get the most bang for your buck by pursuing something that is closely aligned with what you do on a day-to-day basis.
