When you start getting into languages with other character sets, it does get hard... and I think your focus should definitely be on speaking prior to reading/writing (programs like Pimsleur are speaking and listening focused). Remember language is more of a spoken thing... alphabets and reading/writing are relatively new developments by comparison. Also, the Slavic languages are among the most removed from English of any of the European sub-language families, another difficulty.
