MRUP10 wrote: » @LittleBIT from the way I understand it after obtaining secret clearance you should be good to go for 10 years. As for signing another contract after the first one some medical and dental items may expire so you may need to redo some of that stuff, certs expire so they will need to be up to date, and may need to go back through CRC if you come home after the initial contract.

The guys out here at 25th Signal Bn are probably the worst helpdesk/technicians I have ever encountered in my life. It is not just me either, seeing them deal with other customers makes me wonder if they have ever interacted with people before. Its amazing they still hold the contract. I think that is why people GTFO once they get some experience.

And I kind of know someone who does government work, although I have no idea what it is. I'm a veteran, I think I had a secret clearance, but that was 20+ years ago. And I came home from work today in not the best mood. Once home, and after thinking of the above things, I said screw it, maybe I should apply! If the security clearance process takes 4 months, that means I could have the CCNA R&S and the Security+ if needed, ready to go. I am already well underway in my studies for the CCNA R&S. I have never been a sys admin, I have done desktop support for 4+ years and have done a bit of data center work. I am working towards more data center jobs, would it be easy to find a data center technician / NOC job on one of these overseas contracts? Or network administrator? I'm not happy here, and I wouldn't be totally happy there, so the hell with it, I might as well get a 6 figure bank account in the process of being unhappy, then come back here and do good things (for myself) with it! I can then go where I want to be, and the wife doesn't have to like it. That's a long story in and of itself. Would it be easy to use my free time there to study for more Cisco certs and test for them? I have no interest in traveling or sightseeing in the middle east, might as well put the time to good use! And the no alcohol rule isn't a problem for me. What's the danger level in these jobs? Do I have an above average chance of encountering an errant bullet or roadside bomb?

Do you have any direct examples of this that you can share? I would like to know more information about some of the challenges you faced or witnessed dealing with them. Thanks.

Leonardo Fantastico wrote: » There is no reason to work for Vectrus. If you already have at least an interim clearance there are firms that pay a lot more. If you don't already have at least an interim clearance the wait from your first interview until your first paycheck is about 6 months. That is how backed up things are at the moment just to get a determination on an interim clearance [no fault of Vectrus - it is affecting everybody]. Plus, there is NO GUARANTEE that a final determination on your clearance will happen before your year is over. If you quit Vectrus they will pull your application and have to start all over again with another company. You could be stuck in the Middle East/Asia for years until you are given a final clearance. This isn't Vectrus' fault. The whole clearance process is in chaos.
