UnixGuy's good news

So I'm starting a new job in 10 days......

A little bit of history...I took a pay cut for this job (been here almost a year)...and for the new job, let's just say it pays more than the job I had before..and by more I mean SIGNIFICANTLY MORE icon_cool.gif

Now a cautionary tale about taking a paycut, and a lesson I had to learn myself....

When you take a paycut, be very tactful and remain as professional as you can because some people can (and will) mistake your lower pay for a lack of skill from your side...you will also deal with less experienced people, and they will even try to teach you things you already know...sometimes WRONG things....so be very careful..don't let anyone undervalue you...perception is reality sometimes...just be wary. It worked out extremely well in my case, but I wasn't in a great place towards the end.

In the interview, make sure you ask a lot of questions about the structure of the team, you don't want to be the only underpaid person in the team...even if money is not your priority, it might get to you as time goes...

Anyway, money goal achieved (even more than expected to be honest). I'm going to be doing large scale incident response....fun times ahead!

Congrats! How can asking questions about the structure of the team help in preventing yourself from being the only underpaid person of the team? More importantly, how do you know if you're the only underpaid person of the team?

    Good questions!

Some teams (specially small to medium sized environments) will not use terms like "Senior"...so if you are in a team where ALL the members have the title "Consultant"...then you know at least you all have similar titles (possibly similar pay)...but when you go to a team where titles are something like "analyst", "manager", "senior manager", "Specialist"...then ask more questions...otherwise you might end up with a visionary highschool student who live with their parents giving you tips on the importance of choosing a complex password (I'm exaggerating obviously but you get the point).

You will never know if you're the only underpaid person...unfortunately this is something you'll find 3+ months into the job...

Pretty much, it was a literal one step back..three steps forward icon_cheers.gif

I can't give out too many details it's a small scene here....but no Porsche no Cadillac (I sound like a rapper now). ...I'm going to walk to work ;) ...so it's much closer to home (commute reduced from 2 hours to 10 minutes). I actually don't own a car by choice...

Responsibilities are primarily security incident response...tools while I don't know everything they have but I heard they have a lot of tools...think SIEM, WAFs, etc....the usual stuff. It's a large scale environment so there is separation of duties, my focus is incident response (CERT).

Congrats!! Prime example of great things happening to people who deserve it (ie working hard). I took a $1000 paycut for my current position and honestly it only helped because it showed them it was where I wanted to be. In the grand scheme of things $1000 isn't much, but the gains in reputation paid dividends. Also, can't put a price on experience and you're a prime example of looking at the the long game.

So to my understanding, you had a job that you didn't like (i.e selling hot dogs) but you had a fine salary. You then decided you will take job you would like to do (i.e incident handling) but for a lower salary because of lack of experience?. Now you taking another job, with experience and your salary sky rocket, and you do what you like to do?

    Congrats anyway :)

    HAHA not exactly!

It's not about liking or not liking a job! but using your analogy, I had a job that I didn't hate that paid good, but I wasn't learning certain stuff I wanted to learn, so I changed to job where I thought I would learn more, I ended up learning very little AND it paid much less, now im going to a job that pays a lot more and it pays better than both previous jobs.

I did learn in both previous jobs, and learning progress isn't linear of course, but it all adds up. Thanks!
