Install Kali Linux on VMWare Workstation 14 Player (non-commercial use version)

Downloaded Kali Linux onto my hard drive:
https://www.kali.org/downloads/ (Downloaded the image [FONT=&quot]Kali 64 bit). HTTP downloaded instead of Torrent download[/FONT]
https://www.offensive-security.com/kali-linux-vmware-virtualbox-image-download/ (downloaded the image [FONT=&quot]Kali Linux 64 bit VM)[/FONT]

Loaded VMWare Workstation 14 Player (non-commercial use version). Performed the following:

1. Selected 'Create a new Virtual Machine'.
2. Selected the radio button 'Installer disc image file (iso)' and selected the iso file from my hard drive.

Once selected, I get an error message - could not detect which operating system is in the disc image. You will need to specify which operating system will be installed.

Please advise how to fix.

Make sure your ISO is good (can compare checksum to Kali site). If it looks fine, then try selecting Debian 7 x64 from the OS list.

why download the iso and VM image?

should only need one or the other

Just specify the operating system and continue on.

Got it working in the end. Selected the third option 'I will install the OS later'. Went through the setup wizard and it worked.

I had the same issue, but I download and install VM version of Kali and another way is of course "I will install the OS later"

I tell VMWare that it's Debian and it installs. The pain usually comes aftewards when trying to get VMWare tools to install correctly.

Do not install VMware tools from Workstation. Use the ones that comes with Kali. I.e open terminal and do a

apt-get install open-vm-tools-desktop

For anyone else reading this thread, the VMWare "image" is a pre-built virtual machine. No installation (of a guest os) is necessary.
