What text editor do you use and why?

Since this was suggested in a different thread.

I use notepad and gvim under Windows and vim and nano under Linux. Why? Well I'm forcing myself to learn vim for those times when nano is never available, and because I love how people look so confused with they double click that reassociated .txt file under Windows and then they can't figure out how to actually edit the text.

Windows - notepad, wordpad, ultraedit
Linux - vi (because I have to), Midnight Commander (mc)

oh and why? I like ultraedit's style they put code in... and midnight commander has a GREAT editing interface (just like MS DOS's edit)

Windows = Notpad++ - excellent software with tabs and you can choose if your doing something in a certain language ie C, Python, Java, etc.. love using that feature.

Linux - Vi normally, if I'm in a gui depends on the distro.

I haven't used NotePad++ since the v3 release. It does support a lot of interesting plug-ins. I'll never give up Vim, tho.

I've always liked Ultraedit but haven't used it in a while since it costs $. I've been using the regular Notepad. I'll give Notepad++ a try, especially since it's free.

In linux it's either vi or gedit.

Again notepad++ has some nice plug in, and lots of nice features. Like the way it can change the EOL format between windows and Linux, and that you can set up SFTP sessions to Linux boxes to edit files directly. Other features like being able to record a macro and then apply it to a complete text file is great.

Other than that for a lot of stuff windows notepad is plenty

For windows, notepad++ just for the tab functionality.
For linux, typically vim if I'm working, or kwrite if I'm just looking at the contents of a file.

all my co-workers swear by Evernote. lol, somebody preached to me about it for like 10mins. Too lazy to download it still but from what I hear its super super cool. syncs to all your devices or something like that.

On my Linux box or my Macbook I use Nano if it's just a quick and simple edit. For scripting/coding I use Sublime Text.

If I'm on Windows I'll use Notepad++, but I don't do much actual work on a Windows host anymore.

Evernote is not a text editor!
