NoMachine NX - Download the NX Terminal Server and Remote Access Software

The speed is far better than VNC and is pretty much a next > next > next install

Just have to make sure that

a. you do have 'localhost' specified in /etc/hosts
b. Set

AllowTcpForwarding yes
X11Forwarding yes
X11UseLocalhost yes
PermitTunnel yes

in /etc/ssh/sshd_config

as it is using SSh to connect to the host.

It is faster because it is compressing the X11 protocol. VNC works by compressing a bitmap of the actual screen which is slower but means you can use VNC with any system.

You do not need to use their licenced server, FreeNX works fine as well.

NX definitely blows VNC away when there are any kind of bandwidth constraints. Performance wise, it's comparable to RDP.
