Fix DNS Zones for Active Directory

Server 2003 Support Tools included 'netdiag' which you could run with the switch

'/fix'

in order to create the Active Directory necessary DNS zones.

Is there a similar command in 2008 or do I have to create all those zones manually ?

Isn't netdiag in 2008? Restarting the net logon service always did the trick too

Nope - its not build in and restart netlogon doesn't do the trick - heck not even restarting the whole server.

I guess Server 2008 doesn't really like promoting a server which already has a working DNS role

Just googled it a bit and it seems like netdiag is deprecated. Did you try a dcdiag /fix? Maybe that has taken over some of the functionality. I'm sorry, but I really haven't delved too deep into Server 2008 yet.

Tried that but get also all sorts of errors because it seems to rely on a working DNS structure in order to fix .. whatever it fixes

Well .. I just remove AD and DNS again and let Server 2008 do its thing automatically ... What happened to the good old days where you had to do everything "by hand" ey
