IT job title.

Hi,

I was wondering, what exactly a IT title means.

I know is information technology, but lets say.

I started this job which did not work out so well. It was like, I had to go to K-marts, ride aids, etc and Install 3 new data lines, phone lines, push all over the store from the basement. Go on the store and call level 2 to change area codes. Things like that. Most likely these i mentioned.

What would that be considered like? IT Tech or Field Technician?

Btw, the job did not work out because I had to meet the guy in PA from NJ every week to get materials and had to carry a ladder on a small VW Cabrio.

Anyhow, explain me these 2 titles better if possible.

Of the titles you gave I would say field tech is probably the best.

If these are the only choices...Field Tech.

Though I wouldn't consider that position a Field Tech either. Maybe an Installation Person (based on what you have written above Installation Specialist just doesn't seem correct). Or just Installer. It depends if you quoted the jobs or if you merely were given a job-ticket and sent to the location to do the work.

Sorry, but it doesn't sound as though this job was a highly skilled job and to use Field Tech as a title to place on future resumes...sounds like a lie.

You could contact your former employer to clarify what your title was, I'm sure you had some classification with them and they can provide that to you.

When you accepted the position (or actually during the interview), did you bother to inquire what your responsibilities would include and type of vehicle?

If you just did cabling, then Cable Installer.

Maybe Telecommunications Cable Installer if you wanted to get fancy.

If you actually did something with the equipment attached to or using the cable, then maybe Telecommunications Cable Technician if you did more voice than data and wanted to be even fancier. Or Network Cable Technician if you did more data cable than voice.

The title of the job if you are considering what to put on your resume would be whatever your former employer assigned you for a job title.

Putting something else on your resume to make it sound better can be tempting, but around here employers call and verify your employment history and often fish info such as job titles, job duties, and anything else they can get. It would raise a red flag to me, even if they were a good candidate, if I determined the title listed on the resume did not match what the employer told me the job title was.

I agree with this, but I have worked places where I was never formally given a job title. This seems like it was a bit of an ad hoc sort of position. Were you given a job title when you were hired?

Right, well on the interview he did not mentioned it at all. It was all by phone, he asked me the tools I had, I explained him. He said every Kmart has a ladder. But did not mentioned how they "bit*&" to let you use one.

Anyways, what ever the job title was I will not use it ever, in fact I hate the fact I worked a couple days 12-13 hours a day and still haven't got paid!
He finally answered the phone and said by this friday o_O!

Anyways I have a interview tomorrow at Geek squad Best buy.
In fact thats how I got to this forum, I read some bad things about working at Best buy.

I have a pretty big number of clients calling me daily or almost, for computer repairs, upgrades etc.
So even if Best buy don't pay off so good I might still use their benefits...Hopefully,if I get the job.

From what I see everyday, it seems that titles in IT field in general are irrelevant and depend on the company....don't give it much attention
