which router should i get?

eBay Seller: telemark32: cisco 831, Computers Networking items on eBay.com I know I need a router that has sdm but for all usefulness and future certs and what not,s which one would I find usefull for the price? I also had the only serial port go out in my 2600 instaid of just replacing the single should I maybe purchase Genuine Cisco NM-4A/S 4-Port Serial Card 2600 3600 - eBay (item 180413622382 end time Oct-02-09 10:05:54 PDT) instaid?

oh and my reason for replacing the serial card is it is failing on me, the light isn't lighting up. Its still noticed in the IOS so I assume its just at the connection? I tried different cords. How well is the ios at detecting hardware failures?

Have you tried dynamips or GNS3? You can do all of the routing simulations including SDM with it.

When you mention "...and future certs..." which certificate(s) were you planning to attain?

GNS is cool,but I already have my homelab just looking for one or more routers/switches that I could find useful.

For future certs security and ccnp,possibly the other specialized certs not sure quite yet.

One thing I just figured you could do was using a loopback adapter/bridge it with your physical connection makes it possible to connect GNS3 to real equipment. I have a 3745 in GNS3 with a voice IOS and it's connected to my (real) 3550's that have some 7960's connected and they work great.. also I can load cisco IP communicator and it comes right up as well. Super coool!!

You probably already know this, but figured someone else might not.

Look into the 2600XM series routers. You can go with a 2611XM.

I would say check out a 2611xm. I have one at home and it works great. You could even add a few cheaper 2610xm's if you just want some hardware to play with.

True. 1760's aren't bad either really. And you can add voice modules directly to them where on the 2600 series you have to add that big carrier module thing first.

I just picked up a 1760 with 128/64 memory and 1 year warranty for $42 shipped. You can't get a linksys at walmart for that.. lol
