Finished Darills book. got 89 right out of 100 questions...

Hi guys. Just yesterday I've finished Darill's amazing book and I took my first full practice test (the one at the end of the book). I got 11 wrongs. I clearly need more study time, I've done worst in access control, well known ports and authentication methods - kreberos, chap and all that. Surprisingly I'm pretty good at crypto stuff (Rayburn box ah Darill? nice!).

What would you suggest to help me further understand these topics?

I haven't taken the Security+ exam, nor have I seen the CBT Nuggets for it, but I know they are almost always right on the mark. I would grab the Nuggets and pick up some good practice exams.

I plan to take the Sec+ this summer and have already seen the nuggets for it. I would highly recommend Nuggets. It was straight to the point and easy to follow in accordance with the 08' version of the exam. Combined with Darill's book, you'll be unstoppable.

I also just finished Darill's book and took the exam at the end and got a 94.. Just goofed up on some easy questions.. And I just need a little extra time on the ports. I have took the free exams out there on the web and they are pretty hard by the fact they are not worded the greatest. Well what I am trying to say is.. is it worth while taking the free ones as they don't seem spot on as Darill's book is.

If you read the book and scored 89/100 it sounds like you are ready to consider taking the exam. I don't know that spending the money on nuggets (although I have heard they are especially good for sec+) would be worth your while.

If I were you, I would look at some practice tests. (Transcender or ucertify) If you do well on those, then it is test time. If you don't do so well, they can point you in the right direction for what to study.

I think the nuggets are $300 and the Transcender is in the low $100's.

I agree with Devilsbane. If you read the book, understood the practice test questions in each chapter, and understand the questions and answers in the post test, you're ready.

I always like to stress that it's important to understand why the right answers and right and why the wrong answers are wrong. The answers include explanations to give you this knowledge. As long as you understand the questions and the explanations, you're ready.

I agree with Devilsbane. If you read the book, understood the practice test questions in each chapter, and understand the questions and answers in the post test, you're ready.

Mr. Gibson, I just finished downloading your book on my Kindle. Money well spent from what I read so far. I just finished taking the first assessment and I got close to 60% right from the 78 questions. I plan on going through this book over the long weekend and then prepping with a Transcender AFTER I take your big test at the end of the book.

I didn't plan on taking Security+ so soon, but I figure now is good time to get it out of the way before I start WGU. Much of what I got right had to deal with encryption, protocols and ports (though the one e-mail question threw me off...I have never been part of a IMAP implementation and hence did not know what the port was...thanks to you, I know it now. LOL!). Between the reviews I read on TE and Amazon, I have little doubt that I can pass within the next 2-4 weeks.

Thank you, sir and will definitely let you and everyone else know how I do when I schedule for the exam.

Agreed. The Nuggets for this is done by Michael Shannon and he's definitely a pro of security. I thought the video was done very well.

Darill's book is by far the best resource I've come by so far for Sec+. The font and writing style used makes this extremely easy to read and its helps you understand your mistakes thoroughly

. I hope he writes books for other certifications too

pair Darill's book with Michael Shannon's Nuggets videos and you're on point. That's what I'm doing. people have said you could pass the exam using Darill's book alone, but I like going in OVER prepared. good luck!

Hey Yosi,

It's been a while so I was wondering if you have taken the exam yet. I think you may have been ready when you posted this last month.

I like to ask this question in the classroom. "Does anyone know what an isosceles triangle is?" Even though we all learned this in high school, we don't all know the answer. As more time passes, that information becomes harder to retrieve.

The point is that if you're not able to continue studying and wait too long before taking the test, the knowledge slips away. Then again, if you are able to continue studying, you'll understand the information at a much deeper level and be closer to aceing the exam.

It is when two sides of the triangle are equal. And becuase of the two equal sides, it also has two equal angles.

But seriously now, you are absolutely correct. "If you don't use it, you lose it" is true. The longer that you wait without using or reviewing the material, the more information that is going to slip away. That little (or maybe big if you wait a long time) amount of information could be the difference between a pass and a fail.
