Train Signal

So I've been watching the Train Signal videos. I just got done watching the video that talked about setting up a new location and I feel cheated. If this is important and I need to it and yet they gloss over it. I setup the server named it but I had the network sitting on my virtual router.

On the main DC I made the subnet and the site but if I'm doing this on a virtual server (like they are) and they don't explain how to do it ourselves. So I'm confused on how to replicate it. Plus I have a question. In the subnet part do I need to make the site subnet exactly what it is at the location?

So say I make the subnet 192.168.3.1 /26 do I need to make that the network address and how does Windows know that its right?

Specifying subnets is exactly what it sounds like.

If the subnet for the site is 10.5.x.x then you specify it in the wizard as 10.5.0.0/16

EDIT: You also have to keep in mind that the trainsignal videos very cleary say in the last section that they are not an all encompassing resource and that you should also review books and other material as well. Although, if you feel a section is sorely lacking (and i've seen some places that were on TS videos, and notified them accordingly) then its something they should definitely rectify.

Thanks. Watching the 70-640 video #16 "Creating the Chicago location" I know its not the job of the instructor on how to set up the virtual servers or whatever but I just though a little more could of been said in terms of people following along in VMWare.

I realize that but I learn the best by watching / doing and I know it falls out of the scope doing firewall ports and what not but still your suppose to be setting up a different office doesn't help when you can't at least test replication.

I haven't seen the video, but I have seen other resources covering the same topic. They are probably just showing you how to create new sites and subnets, like you would in the real world, but not actually using them. It is good to practice creating sites and subnets, but if they don't map to actual networks and servers (specifically a DC configured in the site and in that subnet), just know that they won't be doing anything.

Does the training walk you through building additional DCs in additional networks? If you want to try building additional sites so you can see the replication function, you can do so. You will have to setup an additional network with a DC, and configure routing between the two networks. In VMware Workstation, you can create a new internal network for this purpose, connect your new DC to it, then build a VM that connects to both networks and serves as a router for them (there are various purpose-built Linux distributions that handle this, such as SmoothWall). Finally add routes to the servers so they know how to get to the other networks.

@scottaskinger - I'm really impressed that you would come on here to address this issue. That shows a lot of class and dedication on your part. You should really spend some time going through these forums here as a lot of people here have used your products.
I'm using the 70-647 Trainsignal video for my studies now and like it a lot.

There is something I'd like to recommend. Since TS seems to have some sort of parnership of some kind with Transcender would it be possible for TS to do something like Transcender is doing here http://www.techexams.net/forums/jobs-degrees/56799-certification-candidate-social-media-user-part-time.html. I think if TS teamed up with Transcender on this then you would have a lot of people interested in pursuing it.

I feel the trainsignal W2K8 videos were rushed to release which meant things werent checked properly and some things were not covered properly in the content. A fine example was the original 70-643 video series. It was poorly done and a joke really. I emailed TS with the errors and would have asked for a refund but it was months since i had bought it and i had already returned another TS video series which disqualified me from more refunds.
I was lucky enough to get a freebie from a Testout manager which meant i could stick to my certification timeline. Now i am reading that the 70-640 is being updated again? From memory it has already been updated once.

The 640 video had a couple issues (that i thought were addressed?)

The 642 video was alright, but awfully dry.

The 643 video was junk. It covered maybe 1/8th of the material that one would need to know, and if i remember right a portion of what it did cover was wrong.

the 647 video was pretty solid, but it glazed over a couple spots and totally omitted a couple others.

They redid the 643 and I didn't like the remake either so I returned it for a refund. The 647 looks good from what I've seen of it so far but like Hyper-me said it does glean over a few topics. That's why it's good to use more than one source.

Hi All-

Sorry, I wasn't able to get back in here earlier. A busy day with meetings and then kids/family stuff in evening. Several things to point out and/or talk about.

1. I really do appreciate all of the feedback, positive and negative. It is eye opening, informative, sometimes disappointing, but overall excellent. I'm truly amazed at the volume of feedback and activity on these forums. I've worked with Johan for a long time and TechExams.net has come a long way.

2. Quality Training is our #1 priority. I founded Train Signal almost 8 years ago and the reason I created the company and started creating training (I created the first 16 courses we released) was because of the junk that I continually found when I taught at schools, both the books and their curriculum. Students were being ripped off and the schools only cared about how much money they were making. We will never shift models and stray away from creating a quality product and not caring about our customers. However, we make mistakes and have released bad courses (see next points).

3. 70-643 Course. After seeing multiple posts here last year with very specific and negative comments, I became concerned. I love my company, value our brand and I take things personally, even if I'm not the person who created the course. I thoroughly reviewed this course and I was very disappointed, mostly with the lack of depth and overall professionalism. Unfortunately, we had to let this instructor go and we decided to completely redo this course and offer free copies to anybody who had previously purchased it.

4. 70-640 Course. This course was created before the 70-643 by the same instructor. There were a few technical errors that were updated within the course previously. Since redoing the 70-643 course, we have decided to completely redo the 70-640 course as well. This course doesn't have the same fundamental problems as the original 70-643 course, but we decided that it doesn't live up to our standards and we would rather invest the time and money into doing it right. The re-release is due out in October.

5. Real World Training. Something that I think is important to point out is that our focus when we create a course is on real world skills first, certification second. For example, somebody watching our Exchange 2010 course should be able to setup, install, manage, etc. an Exchange Server and understand even the intricacies that don't pertain directly to Exchange (i.e. firewall ports, external DNS, etc.). This is our primary goal. In addition, we want to help people prepare for their cert, but as @earweed said, I believe that you should always use multiple sources for studying, to truly comprehend a subject.

There are some exceptions to what I say above, for example somebody buying an A+ course is going to be really interested (probably as a primary goal) in getting certified. We realize this and make sure to hit on all certification objectives. Also, our "problem" courses, referenced above, are terrible examples (70-643 in particular) of real world training. This course didn't dig into the details at all.

6. Customer Service & Return Policy. We have a 90 day guarantee with some limitations, but it is not designed to be gimmicky. We truly believe in our products and want to do right by our customers. If you aren't happy with a course and you want to return it, call us, we will give you a refund even if you are returning your second course (or third, etc.) or you are past the 90 days. We have to have "rules" in place though, otherwise some people will abuse our policies.

7. @earweed's idea/link (Transcender). We have actually run a promotion like that before, a couple of times. I will follow up with a couple of people here and we will put something like that together for TechExams.net, as long as Johan is good with it.

Scott, are you talking about 70-640 created by Ben Culbertson?

My company purchased a set of them not long after they were done and they very rarely, if ever, worry about things like upgrades. Usually a staff member requests a set of videos for personal study and then the rest of the staff make use of them. So I've literally just finished those 70-640 videos this week.

This was my first Trainsignal video so I wasn't sure what to expect but my overall feeling was that the course was very good, but was probably pitched at the wrong level. There were areas such as ADFS, AD RMS and DNS in general which were glossed over and they are major parts of the coursework material.

However...I have recommended this course to other colleagues who have little AD experience. For those people the course is brilliant.

My point is that maybe this video isn't up to your usual standard but that doesn't mean the course is wrong. I'd seriously consider marketing it as an introduction to AD.

So you let go of Coach Culbertson? I actually enjoyed his 640 video (minus the couple of spots of misinformation). The 643 video was atrocious....I don't think I could make any excuse for that.

I can say that I dont think I have ever seen such great customer service, which tells me I can be confident in purchasing materials from Trainsignal, and confident that my feed back will be taken to heart.

Coach Culbertson is gone? I'm really liking the 647 videos with him. I don't care too much for his replacement who did the upgraded 643 video.
TS does have really good customer service and having Scott come on here shows that TS wants input from IT pros about their products.

Yes, unfortunately we had to let "Coach" go. Coach is a great guy, with a great heart and a great work ethic, but it was something that we had to do in order to attain the quality of courses we are looking to put out.
