Cisco AIM-CUE for Voicemail question

Hi

just a question, I bought 2811 router from ebay, I plan to play with voicemail, what do I need for this? I saw that there is an option for AIM-CUE and I saw one in ebay selling a cheap Cisco AIM-CUE-1GBCF 1GB Compact Flash. Do I only need the 1GBCF for me to practice voicemail in my 2811? How about the AIM card itself where the 1GBCF card will be placed? Does it already included in the 2811 by default? Or I need to buy it separately? I ask this because my 2811 is just on its way and this is my first time to have a cisco router,

AIMs are modules that you install inside a compatible router. Think of an AIM as an internal expansion card like for your computer. You can get AIMs that do different things like VPN acceleration.

That is just a Cisco branded CF card that came out of a CUE AIM.

You need the CUE AIM.

You need a CF card for the CUE AIM but a generic CF card normally works.

Some configurations have it but it is unlikely your one will since the seller would have added a premium for this and also mentioned it in the auction.

I've got another question, and it made me confuse. Based on cisco website

AIM Restrictions

The following restrictions apply to the AIM2-CUE-K9 in the Cisco 2811 router:
•Only one AIM2-CUE-K9 or AIM2-APPRE-104-K9 can be installed in a Cisco 2811 router and it must be installed in AIM-0.
•The AIM2-CUE-K9 and AIM2-APPRE-104-K9 cannot be used with AIM-IPS modules in the Cisco 2811 router.

Does that mean that only AIM2 can be installed in a 2811 and not AIM? Or cisco means that this is only for AIM2-CUE-K9, and AIM can still be installed in 2811?

AIM-CUE works fine in a 2811. You also have an option of the NM and NME CUE modules. The AIM2s are brand new = big $$$

^Thanks for the clarification. Yeah I'm also looking for the NM-CUE. Base on your experience in and ccnav --> ccvp, what is the appropriate to get? AIM-CUE of NM-CUE? And which is cheaper? I saw that AIM-CUE is cheaper with 1GB flash, while the NM-CUE offers 40GB? Do we really need the 40GB for ccnav to ccvp? Will it be fully utilized?

If you're using the voicemail for CCNA:Voice lab purposes only... that is a very expensive piece of gear to have. If you're setting this up in a SOHO type of environment, then maybe you'll see a ROI. The biggest difference in the different CUE (AIM & NM) is one is flash based memory (faster, but smaller capacity). The other is an actual 2.5 HDD, slower, moving parts so its prone to hardware failures, but it can store more. Again, if you're only looking for lab usage, I would suggest you put the money towards additional gear. Just my thoughts. HTH.

Yeah I agree with you, either of the two (aim or nm) are very expensive, I think I'll try to just burrow one and hope they will lend me.

When after ccnav you continue the path to ccvp, does it have a lot of voicemail topics?

You will want to go with the AIM-CUE. I checked this stuff out back awhile ago and the NM-CUE's are at least $1000 for it. I think you can find AIM-CUE's for ~$200 or so.

I honestly can't answer that as I've not advanced that far in my Voice studies... probably at the beginning of the new year is when I'll tackle voice head on. I have a lot of experience with CME, but haven't touched the CUCM stuff much!!!

I think someone like Pitviper would be able to answer you better about the VP topics...

Unity Express is a quirky little animal – I would definitely recommend getting some hands on experience with it not only for the CCNA Voice, but also for the real world – Even more so if you don’t have access to, or have never touched a UC520. Outside of CCNA Voice, CUE is pretty much all but left out of the CCVP, only to surface again at the CCIE level. Of course if you have one handy you can have some fun setting it up as a backup when you get into the high availability configurations (CIPT2).

Most of the advanced CUE "stuff" is covered in the IP Telephony Express Specialist exam (IIUC2).

I would say that overall, the Unity/Unity Connection coverage as presented in the current CCVP curriculum is underwhelming to say the least – hopefully this is addressed when the new tests are released. As it stands now, basic integrating between Voicemail and CUCM, and integration troubleshooting is really all that is covered in any depth.

I bought a NM-CUE while doing my CCNA:V (US$350, April 2009), and apart from walking through the initial setup from the book and CBT (plus installing the CUE image via the boot loader [my CUE had been wiped]), I've never had a real "need" to use it since.

Now I wouldn't call it a wasted lab investment, just something I've not needed to delve deeper into yet.

As suggested by others, at this stage of your studies, investing in other routers/switches might be the better bet.

I'm looking forward to them revamping the CCVP track and really spending some time on Unity, Meeting Place, Contact Centre, Video, etc (in all their flavours). If you don't cover them, you take the Unified out of Unified Communications.

It seems that after all these months, I've decided only now to get 1 aim-cue for voicemail and work practice!

My question is has anyone been tried this on cue version 8 and make it worked? Because based on this:

aim-cue is only supported on up to cue version 7.0 , 7.1

It looks like you would need an AIM2 module to get it to work with anything higher than 7.2

My correct question is... "Can AIM-CUE work with cucme and cucm 8.0?" Because based on this matrix Cisco Unity Express Compatibility Matrix [Cisco Unity Express] - Cisco Systems
It says that it is supported, but CUE (AIM-CUE Module) should have a version of 7.2 or 7.3 to support cucme 8.x and cucm 8.x

Can anyone confirm this because aim-cue is the cheapest among the CUE cisco offers. Thanks!

7.2 and 7.3 are special releases for AIM-CUE which supports CUCM 8.0 and 8.5 respectively
