Hi Guys,

Has anyone played about with it yet? Im wondering if anyone has tried large topologies around 30 routers or so?

IOU is an internal Cisco resource and not to be used in the public domain. Anyone found doing so or allowing that will be sued.

Although it might of been internal, it was leaked out by Cisco themselves.

Thats besides the point. Using IOU without the express consent of Cisco is most unadvisable.

This msg was aimed to those who are authorised to use it i.e TAC engineers if there are any on the forums or to those who had any sort of exposion to it.

Precisely. TE's footprint is high these days with thousands of visitors. Many of them work for Cisco. Discussion of an internal resource is unwise and may cause issues for TE regardless of how well meaning the intent. The thread will probably be locked very soon.

Sure -- anyone who's taken the CCIE Lab since they added the Troubleshooting section.

IOU has been mentioned in the Cisco Learning Network Forums -- and those posts haven't been moderated there -- and in some trade publications. While it's not a secret anymore, Cisco employees should still adhere to any existing Cisco Policies and not talk about it (at least until there's an official policy change). Just because the horse is out of the barn doesn't mean it's a good idea to ride it.

The Lab Troubleshooting section now includes Layer 2 Switching via L2IOS.

Posts about pirating

Hi all,

Just thought I'd chip in on this topic - since I used to work on TAC - albeit a number of years ago.

The hush-hush secrecy is a teeny bit overblown - it was little more than a side-project for some of the coders before it became useful, Cisco didn't want it getting out because the quality was low and it was a pain to use. Back then you couldn't even interface externally and it only ran in SPARC platforms. Also, it didn't emulate a particular router, it was a platform all on it's own with it's own IOS images. All we needed was people raising support calls for that!

I expect it's moved on considerably since and there are probably commercial and intellectual property issues that keep it in house but it's fairly common knowledge now so talking about it is fine. Having said that, I don't feel like it would offer anything over GNS3 and it definitely isn't as good as having a real lab to toy with.
