I'm trying to request a title change

Hello everyone, my current job title is IT Support Technician and im looking into formally requesting a title change to Systems Administrator.
I was a intern at this company 2 years ago and was hired fulltime last year. Total I have about 4 years of IT experience, a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology and am currently working on my Master of Science in Information Assurance. On top of that I currently hold approximately 10 IT certifications. I know that job titles don't mean much in ts field but not having the word Technician on my resume tends to attract low-level (repair/bench tech) positions. Whats really prompting
I don't know if it matters but I was hired with only a Associates degree.

I welcome all input.
Here is what I have so far,

Dear Mary,

I have been with <my company> for approximately a year not including my time as a intern. I feel that I am comfortable with my position with the company and believe that I do a good job at performing my assigned tasks. I think that my past experience and current objectives justify a change in my job title.

I am not asking for an increase in salary and the change would be of no cost to the company. However it would be a huge boost to my self esteem and it would give my fellow employees as well as any contacts that I deal with a much better idea of what my position is with <my company>. Would you please consider changing my title to Systems Administrator.

In most companies I've seen titles are mandated by HR and can't be easily changed without some major paperwork. I'm not sure if this would be the case in your company or not though.

I also wouldn't go about it with a formal letter or anything. I'd talk to my supervisor and ask them about the company policy on titles. Bring up your concerns and ask them to look into it for you.

Well my co-worker did this a few years ago. He was originally hired as a Desktop Support Specialist and asked our then IT Director for the change. Unlike him I have more education and do more now especially with our growing linux environment. Also due to the company's financial situation we (IT) have been doing all that we can to save money(including embracing linux and other OOS packages. Since then the IT Director has been let go and we now report directly to the VP of Operations.

I dont know if it makes a difference but were now a IT Team of 2 including me so we do most all of the same tasks.

There still may be a certain amount of slotted positions available on paper. Since its only the two of you it may be that they really don't have a proper title structure or it may be that they have one admin position available and your coworker beat you to it.

I'd talk to your supervisor and find out before writing up some formal letter though.

Well my co-worker which I refer to in my first post is now the Sr. Systems Administrator and they will not be hiring anyone else since they just let go our Network Engineer so we have already been told they it is our responsibility to get up to speed and fill in the gaps with everything that the Network Engineer used to do.

I would have to agree with you; that is one rip of a title! Especially with your credentials! I know people in our company titled 'PC Maitenance Technician'! And they would run circles around me... Im talking Cisco people, not A+...

My manager for example; his title in the system is IT Tech. WTF? I'm an IT Tech...

Two People... What kind of company is this? I really hope you getting mad paid.
