What is the cheapest most powerfull small server out there?

I'll looking to boost my home lab with a server. The problem is I'm really limited in my apartment as far as space is concerned, I was wondering if I could find a server which is basically small but still powerful enough to run multiple operating systems(linux) in a virtualized environment? Any ideas?

I'd check out the Dell PowerEdge T110. You can pick up one with a Quad Core Xeon processor, 250gb SATA drive and 2gb of RAM for $329. It looks like Dell also just released an update to the T110 (T110 II) for $445. It has a dual core i3 processor, and only 1gb of RAM.

Just as an exercise, check out the price for the exact same thing on Dell Canada.

its hard to get small and that cheap

the cpu/motherboard have unlocker so you can manually unlock a second core and it supports virtual that way as well

edit: you can save a little but if you dont need a dvd drive and you can look at other cases

I have a HP Proliant ML115 - quad core opteron & still going strong. That cost me £300 here a year or two back, been superceeded now though.

I run Fedora 14 at home. I just stacked my ram and installed virtualbox. I can run the host os, a couple instances of xp and a couple linux servers and haven't even broke 50% ram usage on 8gb DDR3. I also have a Phenom 1040T x6, but I barely go past 20% cpu on 4 cores.

If you want to have something powerful, cost effective, and small, I put together a home server for nas usage on about $400.

I have the cheapest dual core Celeron they made a year ago. I think it was $40 bucks and I run Server 2008 R2 on it. Do yourself a favor, get an i5 quad core and put Xenserver on it. You could do a lot with that.
