Received the worst news today

Today was an upsetting day...basically my company let me go for "financial" reasons and it sucked because I had just passed my MCSE certification and yet I receive this news. I worked in a school district (one of their clients) and they said they were cutting a lot of people and was freezing their budget because of the cuts (or something like that...cant think straight right now). Right now I'm at a loss, this happens to me every time I get settled in a job and I'm just about sick of it...but I cant see myself doing anything else for a living....I dont know what to do. It was awkward day indeed as for some reason I kept thinking that it was going to be 8 months since joining this company and something in the back of my head kept telling me to update my resume (this was happening as I was driving to work). I thought I had been in good standing and we recently had a meeting about me with the future with the company...maybe it was just a ploy to get me to not think about it? There had been other signs where we would have a company meeting talking about the potential loss of clients? I should've listened to these signs and started acting but I was too settled. Anyways we left in good terms but I was very upset at the time, I basically broke down after the CTO let me know he was letting me go because my luck always turns out this way. I am afraid to go on unemployment because I feel like its unhealthy and only provides bad luck (I was just on a year of it prior to this job and felt like **** after 3 months) I do not know where to begin besides updating my resume...I mean how is the job market? Is it better? or is it the same as before (horrible?). I will be updating my resume and probably be posting for tips as it has been too long and I wanna get back to working. Life sucks right now

Damn man that sucks for sure, big time. Start working on that resume right away, fire it out to as many places as you can. Send it out to not only those job boards, but also check company websites for any openings. There isnt any time to lose, did they give you a notice period, or they just said - today's your last day? I hope they gave you a notice, so you would have some time before no more money rolls in.

Maybe post your resume on here and we can all critique it. Wish you the best mate, it wouldnt be long before you get another role mate. You have the MCSE, experience and an attitude to go with it all, you should be good.

They just cut me off today, as in my username has already been disabled/deleted. I actually just started working on my resume right now, its probably a rough since I dont have a clear mind right now. I will still be getting a check (or maybe two since payday is this week and I worked this week...only two days) but I have a feeling I will have to succumb to filing for unemployment...

Life doesn't suck, just the situation. My advice, don't do anything with the resume right now. Take a pause and decompress. Have a coffee/tea/beer/tequila or whatever relaxes you. Tomorrow start surfing the job boards so you can see what is hot and what's not. Then work on your resume.

It pains me when someone gets dumped for any reason. I've been there before and it's a lonely road. Forget certs, get your resume together and move forward. You can land another sweet job.

Sorry to hear about your lay off my friend. However after being MCSE you should look on the bright side, you might get a better opportunity with better pay now. The IT field, although not in the case of where you came from, is in fact doing a lot better. Hang in there and apply to many jobs, you will see with your new cert/title you will get a lot of offers within a weeks time.

Also do make sure you apply for unemployment, there is no shame in it, and you pay taxes and social security for such situations like you are in right now. Its like paying taxes and then saying your afraid to call the fire department when you have a fire. Ridicules right? i hope you take care of yourself with that unemployment, remember you pay for it to begin with. Also i believe you will find something very fast. Take a day off to relax and gather your strength, come back the next day with a clear and motivated attitude.

whenever i loose a job, it inspires me to get a better job and study harder to improve myself. By "improve myself", I meant, I don't study to get certifications I don't need/study and can't recall half the material after 3 months. I study to get knowledge - technical know-how, with technical know-how comes confidence and calls from recruiters. Don't even worry you lost a job, look at this this way...there is one organization out there that needs my skills, i just have to be prepared when the opportunity arises. I lost my job 2 months ago, what happened to me after that-(1) I got a CCNA this month, after failing it 2ce the last two yrs...lol (2) with all the time I now have, I'm able to focus on the linux class I'm taking in college, it is sponsored by the redhat academy. At the end of the class, I'd probably be a RHCSA. Finally, please don't sell yourself short cos u are out of a job...let it be a spring board to greater stuff man. Good luck geek!!!

No, the worst possible news would be that you're dead. Everything else, you can do something about.

Seriously, just keep pushing forward. Losing a job sucks, but it's certainly not the end of the world. You never know - this might open you up to an opportunity you otherwise would have missed because you were content with your old job.

First, I am very sorry to hear about your job loss.

If you can afford it, take a week off and try to clear your head. Hit the gym, clean the house, just don't get too worked up over it.

Then start fresh. Keep a log of your contacts. And don't forget to thank people you interview with. You just never know who might call you back.

Job losses are tough, right now the private sector is hiring more than they have in the past 2 years so you are better off now then you would have a couple of years ago. Your MCSE is a valuable tool and I would bet that based on your location and your possible willingness to relocate, you could have a MS consulting gig lined up within a couple of weeks. I have seen the job postings in the NYC area, I would be very surprised if you weren't lining up interviews very soon. Hell, I live in Denver and the last time I was unemployed (2009) I would have days where I would have 2-3 interviews and offers coming in at the end of the day...and I didn't have an MCSE.

Sorry to hear about the job loss, its never easy.

I recommend (just like others have) a day or two off, to unwind/drink/cuss/throw stuff against brick walls/release stress/whatever you have to do to get back centered. Seriously, you will be suprised how much a job loss can throw you waaaaay off course. You owe it to yourself to take a couple days and get out all of the frustration jobb loss can put on your shoulders.

Draw unemployment( there is NO shame in that either), and hit the resume trail hard and heavy. Before you know it, you will be back in the saddle again.

That sucks man. I'm not going to lie it took me 5 months to find another job after losing my old one but I didn't have as many certifications as you when I quit. I spent all my time studying those 5 months. So basically, make use of the time you're not working on increasing your value.

I understand that it does suck, but let me put things in perspective. I had a polyp removed from my stomach on Saturday, and a couple of other biopsies taken in my esophogus. I have to wait a week to find out if its cancerous or not. Not to try and top you or anything, but its a job, you'll find a new one. If you need to grab unemployment, so be it. Bills need to be paid, and with your MCSE finished, you'll get more calls from recruiters just based on that search term.

Bah...you're in NY. There is a buttload of places you can go. Just as one door closes, another one opens. You are fortunate enough to be in an area where there are lots of doors.

I am sorry to hear that! It sucks losing a job. Try to focus on the positives. You just got your MCSE. And now you are available to start immediately for that job that you'll find that will want you to start ASAP.
Take a day to relax and update that resume!

Hey man congrads on the MCSE. That is a great accomplishment. Okay not going to say sorry for the lost because got to be honest with your luck is about to change. Take this as a learning expierence and move on. Trust me I have had a rough couple of months with the family and moving 2400 miles away but I have actually turn things around. I am going home in two months and just had a call today from a company where they need people right around the two month mark where the wife and I want to move. Trust me man it gets better..... Just hang in there. Get the resume out and fire that bad boy out there. It is amazing how many places call when you have it up on the job boards. Post them on all of them and do exactly what everyone says but time to upgrade that MCSE to MCITP while looking for a job

Yeah defo work on my MCITP might want to hold off on the exams until you got another job for cash reasons. But can still list on your CV.
