Sonicwall on eBay - deal of the week surely

Was looking for a cheap Sonicwall on eBay and thought there is no such thing. I got an old Pro 300 which is more than rubbish and the NSA ones aren't that cheap, eBay or not.

Then I found a Pro2040 .. not a bad one, especially with Enhanced OS .. According to the seller it had Standard OS but I hoped I can convince our account manager to send me that firmware - so I purchased it for £70 / $115 ... Seems too cheap so I expected a broken one ... Then it was transferred into my account and I was shocked ... if the warranty seal isn't broken (will receive it in the morning) - then bloody hell, it certainly has some nice goodies attached - including Dynamic 24/7 support and firmware upgrades - can't get one cheaper than that - that's for sure..

Nice score on that!

I keep running around replacing Watchguard Fireboxes with Sonicwalls. It is still upsetting though that you can't do everything from the CLI and have to drop into the web management for some things i.e. content filter management.

Never even looked at the CLI or SSH interface lol. But I really like them, even OSPF works well on those NSAs. We ever only hit one limit with them which was based on the amount of rules between zones. Although that was stupidity of some people who used a rule / port / address object rather than grouping. Sonicwalls give you a lot of bang for your buck.

Other firewalls have a brain implant which know which rules need to be removed and do it for you ?!?

I can't tell you how many times I've had a Sonicwall rule not work until I delete it and recreate it, sometimes 2 or 3 times. No, I don't have to do this on my ASA's.

We have about 60 Sonics in production and never had that issue to be honest... Only issues we have were when you start using a lot of zones with vlan tagging and ospf but all those were normally fixed quickly with firmware updates ...

Must be my luck. We have this problem all the time with different Sonicwalls. That and rules randomly disabling themselves.

Colleague just told me that he had an issue when he create new VLAN interfaces and the VPN one disappeared, needing a factory restore

I guess you get what you pay for really. Most annoying thing, compared to Cisco, is that all licenses expire (i.e. antivirus and the sorts) but most licenses with Cisco are one-offs.

Well, Sonics cost a fraction of ASAs with less hassle to learn the interface plus this Sonic is only for one single ESXi server of mine which runs my private email on Exchange - so nothing in proper production

I can't report the same problem either, never had to delete and recreate a rule in a sonicwall. Have had to do that in a firebox though. We're running probably about 80 total sonicwalls out there as well. I don't like how the sonicwall wizard works for creating rules though. You keep ending up with all sorts of duplicate objects if you keep running the wizard. I don't use the wizards but unfortunately my coworkers do.

Duplicates are easy to get when you create NAT rules for example

But it annoys me most when people don't group rules - that is the most annoying thing ...
