Agreed. Just get it. You'll need to learn OSI and common ports anyway.

I'm not sure if its essential (Im studying for my Sec+ now) but I do know that having the N+ gave great foundation knowledge, which translated great into my day job, and into all other certifications that I have been working on.

I'd agree with others that the Network+ knowledge is good to have, but I know many people that have taken and passed the Security+ exam without Network+. Many security professionals in the DoD that have attended classes I taught weren't network professionals, but needed to have the Security+ certification, and they were able to successfully take and pass the exam.

I passed Security+ without Network+ but knew the basics of networking (currently studying for CCNA) so like others have said, not needed but does help.

1 thing you do need is Darril's book and you're all set for a pass! Myself and many others here used it to pass Security+ and it's by far the best book for it.

I couldn't help but respond since you posted this... and I completely agree. While N+ helps, it's not needed. Especially when using Darril's book

Seriously though, being in the DoD community myself, I always recommend your Security+ book to everyone.

I have to agree that it's not necessary but the KNOWLEDGE you would need for the Net+ would benefit you a great deal.

Personally, I had started in on the Security+ certification a few months ago with minimal networking knowledge and decided about 100 pages into the book I was working with that I should get the Network+ certification first. Now that I have my Net+ cert, I can say that attaining that knowledge has provided a great foundation for the Security+ material I am currently studying.

Not Really but it would help, just know your port numbers, wireless, acronyms ,the osi model and all your security+ related questions and you should be good to go.

Well keep us posted on the pass status or not. The exam was straight forward which means you know the answers through the studying process at least for me. The Security + cert can open up alot of areas within the I.T. field; check out these links etc... (i.e. Candidate job roles include security architect, security engineer, security consultant/specialist, information assurance technician, security administrator, systems administrator, and network administrator. )
