Ine cisco voice track

I was on the ine website and read a blog from the instructor giving detailed instruction on how to go from ccnav - cciev in 1 year all through ine. Whats the real likely hood on that? He had the ccnp v planned for 7 weeks seems a little shallow considering I know theres guys on here that took 2+ yrs to get it and theyre experienced guys. Is it doable? Not so much cciev level as i dont find it likely but not impossible but ccnpv in 7 weeks?

I'm not sure if its possible. I'm one of those guys that it took over 4 years to get, but that was from me not being in voice at times, and getting my CCNP and other specialist certs at the same time.

If you follow the plan and put in 12-16 hours a week im' sure you have a good shot. The CIPT2 exam is one of the hardest I have ever taken. Due to not having much time to "play" in a multi cluster setup, and some of the new features like SAF and material lacking. Also you have already mentioned that some of us here are very experiences and struggled with the track.n

The good thing is that there isn't much difference between CCNP V and CCIE V besides UCCX, security and so on. You will know just about everything you need to know to pass. The difference and its a BIG difference is the lab. I've worked with guys who have over 100+ CUCM deployments since 2004 and they have strugged with the lab. I've also seen CCIE's V not be able to setup real world call routing cause they were lab rats and didn't do much engineering outside of the lab.

This is the link for the blog Im talking about From CCNA Voice to CCIE Voice in One Year - A Detailed Study Plan - REVISED April 9, 2012. Definitely raised an eyebrow as they have it all structured as something thats attainable well not so much the cciev training as that can be real pricey. Bootcamp etc..

I would not say that it is impossible but I don't think it is very likely either. Looking back on my studies and test prep I could put together a solid list of things to do in order to pass the exams I have passed in a certain time frame, but without proper guidance I couldn't promise anything. On the other end of the spectrum I know a guy who had a CCNP Vocie because his company (at the time) wanted all there UC employee's to have it. They ran them all through NP Bootcamps over the course of a month or two, and made them take the tests at the end of the classes. He says it was rushed and back-to-back, and that he quickly forgot just about everything they taught him because of how much was thrown at him at one time. His CCNP Voice is expired now too.
My advice to anyone looking to advance their career would be to learn DevOps tools and methodologies. Learn how to write code in languages like Python and JavaScript. Not to be a programmer, but a network automation specialist who can do the job of 10 engineers in 1/3 of the time. Create a GitHub account, download PyCharm, play with Ansible, Chef, or Puppet. Automation isn't the future, it's here today and the landscape is changing dramatically.

Yea thats the thing about rushing studying is that you tend to forget things.. Taking your time and exploring each topic for me anyways help me not only understand but retain..

I've been at CVoice for about 6 months now along with one failed attempt. I haven't been lucky enough to do that many voice deployments but I've been doing voice specifically for a good 3 years now. I've read through 4-5 books including QoS and Voice Gateway/Gatekeepers and hours of labbing on home equipment and now INE racks. I'm about ready to take another shot at CVoice but it really has humbled me about how thorough you have to be with this cert. I can't imagine what studying for the CCIE: Voice would be like at this point in time.

Its Misery. Things you think you know only to have them turned upside down by the requirements of the lab.

Yeah since I took over this lead role it was so much I had to know. I had to go over the CCNP V stuff again, and again so I may as well take the written.

Nice, I finally bit the bullet and bought some rack time with INE, but just figuring out the best way to connect to them has been a headache. I'm thinking Cisco VPN Client is going to be the best solution for me for now.

I know this thread is probably dead but I was thinking what you said mentioning your coworker was sent to a bootcamp to get certified. Then he later forgot everything he studied but that was due to only a week or two of prep/study work at the bootcamp and not looking at the text again. I know in most situations that is the case but now that i think about it the track at INE has you studying for a year at 16hrs a week. I mean if all your shoving down your throat is voice for a good year wouldnt you be well versed in the subject matter well in theory of course?
  • shodownshodown Member Posts: 2,271
well if you go over the INE stuff or a year 12 hours a week you are going to retain it. Voice Builds on top of things, so the basics like calling search spaces and partitions grow to become more and more important as you learn more about voice.

In 2 weeks there is no way you could get everything you needed. You can just pass a test, but I doubt you will look strong at a real CCNP V level interview. There is very little difference between CCIE, and CCNP V besides proving it in the lab(which is a BIG PROVE), but if you have done the material correctly you shouldn't have much trouble getting through it and understanding it. I will say passing the lab is another matter, its insanely hard.

If theres little difference between cciev and ccnpv it makes so much more sense why i've seen many voice job postings asking for either or. I am considering the ccnp v track to specialize in. the ccnp s doesnt really seem that fun. Would you recommend rack rentals or just investing rebuilding my current lab:

Replaced most of my routers with ubuntu server running gns3, all i have left is 2 1760v with pvdm256 running cme 7, 1 asa5505, 2 3550 emi pwr, 2 2950, 4 7940s, have cucm 7.0 havent installed yet not sure if i want to bother.

The biggest difference is UCCX, and on the written exam Security and a few other tiny odds and ends.

shodown whats your opinion on the labbing for ccnp voice rack rental or go balls deep and get newer equipment at home
  • shodownshodown Member Posts: 2,271
    Depends.

none of the vendors have a 8x CCNP V lab. All of there versions are on 7x. You will be able to do the majority of CCNP V by using INE's deep dives. Topics like SAF will be have to be done on your own gear which could be costly. At this point I would hold off on gear until the new IE Voice is announced, unless you work as a independant consultant where having your own gear is a must

Yea shodown hit on all the right points as I'm having this dilemma as well. I did have my home lab going but I was borrowing my previous employer's 2820's and server that I installed CUCM v8 on. My new employer is on v7 and INE is on v7 as well so the newer topics I'm going to have to dig deep on. I just can't justify spending $5k or whatever right now on a home lab. Especially since v9 will eventually hit the market and 2800 series routers just may not do the trick if I ever decide on CCIE: V.

One thing I will add though is that if you have to get your own lab get 1 or 2 28xx's but save money for a 29xx router when the newer version comes out. That way you can do the majority of whats out now and if you do need 15.2 IOS for the next version you can buy one router. With 2 28xx you can still learn SAF by doing it through a CME to CUCM which is what I was doing in my lab. This should limit the blow of the new lab to just 1 to possibly 2 new routers. Also make sure your Server is beefy enough for the new versions, requirements for 8.6 software required more beefier machines, so ensure your server is adequate.

what software is needed to run the labs cucme, cucm what else?
  • shodownshodown Member Posts: 2,271
Unity Connection, and Presence. I also suggest adding UCCX. Even though its not tested its widely used. Its a call center application that looks scary at 1st, but when you spend time with it it becomes easier.

how did you get your UC and Presence service contract? I might run into a bump with that one I dont think i can get my hands on that perhaps rack rental may be the way to go. Unless i can find someone i know that'll let me demo it.
  • shodownshodown Member Posts: 2,271
I don't have a service contract. As for the media I got it from several sources, work, ebay and so on. If you can't find it then yeah you will have to do rack rentals.

Yeah the big changes are SAF, some IOS security changes, and the placement of some CUCM menu's.
