Would you switch jobs?

I was just recently contacted about a new position within the same overall company here are the details
Current position:
Systems Administrator 3
Redhat Linux basically general admin related stuff
Prospective position
Systems Analyst
Redhat Linux but more geared towards a specific application.
The difference would be around $5000.
Do you think the move would be worthwhile to do? The jobs are in different cities, but around same distance driving.

I guess my question is: would you change jobs for only +$5000? Also, would you limit yourself to a specific application that only exists within the company?

What are you currently doing? Does it involve some sort of System Administration?

Have you talked to them? The description doesn't seem to give a full picture of what you would be doing. If you are only supporting one application than it might not be worth it to you.

Would I change jobs for only $5,000? For the right job I probably would.

Depends on your need of the $5k. With your exp moving job title shouldn't hurt you. If you want to stick around doing the sys admin 3 Redhat stuff to get it down better then stay. Other things to consider are they both 24x7x365 type jobs or is the anaylst position a 9 to 5 type? Also how does the company react to rejection ie if something you want comes up will they over look you or keep you in mind?

Is the app something used widely in the tech world that you could transfer those skills to another company or is it an in house non transferable skill type app? That would be the major deciding factor for me. The $5k is pretty negligible IMO.

I do have to say though, I wouldn't really want to pigeon hole myself into a position working with a single app. Your admin skills would be very transferable.

The application is one that I worked with while in the Navy, so the job would be working with the Navy. I talked to the recruiter and asked what the pay rate was for the job which was $15000 less than what I wanted. Asked if they could do what I was asking for and they said that the number I wanted was doable. Current job I am doing basic Sys Admin stuff including IA tasks, but I do not see much growth with the position unless someone leaves or dies. The new position is more of a hands-on position i.e. building servers and going to locations. Both jobs are 8 hour shifts with very minimal on-call time if any.

If all else is equal and it simply pays more, I would not change jobs for $5,000. I would if I made $30,000 or $40,000 annually since it would be a more-than-10% raise, but I wouldn't now.

If the job represents a significant career change due to changing directions or having a more senior role, then I would definitely take it for $5,000 more. If I were unhappy with my job or employer for any reason I would also take it for $5,000 more.

In short, if it's a lateral move and you're happy where you are and with what you're doing, it would be worth trying to get a raise instead of jumping ship. Any other circumstance, and yes, it is worth it.

It sounds like you would be getting yourself into a real niche and limiting your future job prospects. I'd pass for this reason personally.

Depends, how do you see it affecting you long term? Will it provide you with a deeper skillset in that area or will it "limit" you parse? You must think long term in IT, the $$$ will come with time and experience. Getting that experience is what is important and I would say steer clear of anything that would limit your skillset because remember, the more skills you have the more valuable you are to your employer.

Like I said, it "depends".
