Some of the IT certifications are relevant to the telecommunications field. Telecommunications is evolving from the traditional circuit switched TDM world and moving into the packet switched world of IP. I'm sure you've heard of VoIP. While TDM won't disappear over night (or any time soon, for that matter) you will need to look at VoIP to keep current. To understand how VoIP works on an IP network, you should have at least a fundamental understanding of routing and switching. That makes CCENT, CCNA, and CCNA: Voice relevant. CompTIA has CTP+ but that certification is not being offered after the end of this year. There are rumors of them introducing another one, but only time will tell. Also, check out these guys: SIP Training and SSCA Certification for their SSCA (SIP) certification. SIP is the dominant VoIP protocol in use today.
