Active Directory Admin

Good day all. Yesterday I got an offer as an Active Directory Admin. I think it is a wonderful opportunity for me and I am determined to do well in this role. I was hoping if anyone here has had a position similar to this before? I have limited knowledge real world knowledge with active directory but I dont think I'll have any trouble with the job but I would like to take off out of the gates early in this position. Is there a way I can download a test environment to practice Active Directory to get more familiar with it before I start? Or if there are any good resources and tips if I can get pointed to the right direction it would be grateful. I tried searching the forums so if there is already a post with this information I apologies.

I had my interview yesterday and they extended the offer the same same. I have no certifications and a few classes short of my bachelors in mathematics. I've been in IT for a few years so anything is possible I assume.

Read Microsoft's 70-640 Windows Server 2008R2 book for Active directory / DNS (if you are working with 08R2 that is). Or just simply go to youtube, I've found a lot of great videos on youtube for training on many AD topics. Adding users, computers, or any object in AD is really simple. Read up on PKI too if you environment uses PKI.

Just remember not to blow up your AD Schema and you will be good! AD is not hard to learn but its easy to mess it up if you're not careful.

EDIT

One more thing, use technet! Seriously you can learn everything just from Microsofts website.

That is awesome. Congrats! You're another example of how people can still excel in this field without certs. Just takes hard work and evidence to back up your resume.

By any chance is this the job with ITT-Exelis? There were a couple AD Admins posted for Qatar and Afghanistan. Just curious.

I would check out this book. I do a lot of GPO's to make things run smooth. And maybe touch up on your logon scripts.

No it is with a different contracting agency.

Thank you guys for the tips. I am looking through the information now. Do you guys have any idea of what kind of path this can take me to? I know active directory is important and My interviewer said he had guys move to the server team within the same company. I would love to be a server, network, or system admin in the future.

Here is the job description I was sent

MUST:
-2+yrs experience with the following:
-Active Directory infrastructure and domain support
-Helpdesk/Tech Support
-Experience with account creation and permissions in Active Directory
-Experience with Ticketing Systems
PLUS:
-LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol)
-IDM
-ADMT/Domain migration (Active Directory Migration Tool)

This position will be part of the account creation team for a large client. When there is an account created in active directory they will be responsible for troubleshooting any accounts that have issues or are not created properly.
