Getting started in the IT field

I'm looking to make way into the IT field, I graduated 2 years ago with a Bachelors in MIS/ISM and have had 2 unrelated jobs since.

As of right now my knowledge is relatively limited as I didn't exactly make the most of my time in school.

What certifications would be most beneficial for me to earn as a starting point for a somewhat entry-level IT job?

Just looking for anything to point me in the right direction to jump start the this career path, because I cannot stand what I'm doing now.

While its not always the case more often then not basic entry into an IT job without prior almost always requires an A+ certification and some time as a entry level technician to move forward into more technical roles and responsibilities.

Again it's not always the case but it's one of the steps you can take to get your foot in the door somewhere.

Recently I've seen more companies asking for an A+ and/or a Bachelors. Nosoup4u is dead on though saying that the A+ is a great stepping stone. Check out Professor Messer videos if this is indeed the path you're going to go down.

+1 on professor messer's A+ study videos... There are 20+ hours of videos which you can watch over a couple of weeks that will help you grasp (and retain) the requirements for the A+ exam.. Somewhat more beneficial than reading a 10 pound book crammed with so much information that it is difficult to piece all of it together, much less retain it.

I agree about the book. I thought it was just me.

I would also say volunteer your time at a small business (internship) while you are working at another unrelated job so you can build experience and see what part of IT you actually want to go into.

Experience is key - if you can show your passion and skill in a real life environment it'l be a massive boost for your CV!

Thank you all for the feedback! Luckily I held onto one of my textbooks which may be able to help me prepare for the A+ cert(who woulda thought?).

I'll also check out the videos, much appreciated guys!

this is a good idea, you can also get a lot of people network also..
