SRM Question

I'm wondering if I can integrate our SRM protection for my remote sites. So my question is: if I'm using vCenter at my primary data center to manage a remote cluster in one of my remote offices, can I protect that remote office with SRM back to my primary data center? I've been doing some searching and it seems like a corner case.

For SRM, I believe you have to have a vCenter instance running on each site. You should then be able to protect main to remote and remote to main.

Yeah that's what it keeps coming back to. You need it in both places regardless. Meh.

My environment is setup like this:

And technically I have two main active sites that will failover to each other with two vCenters in linked mode. I then have branch offices hanging off each of those sites. I want the branches to failover to one of the active sites.

What I'm getting at is that the remote site and main site vCenter is the same machine. So technically vCenter would always be online anyway. I guess maybe there would be some confusion in the vCenter database perhaps since it's the same machine. That's about the only thing I could think of off the top of my head why you need two. I get the reason in that failing back and forth or if vCenter in the prod site is down you fail it over from the recovery site vCenter.

I think you would ony need one copy of veeam backup and replication per site, its pretty reasonably priced, I know you'd prefer to use one product, but I have used veeam a few times, never over a wan link, and it always does a good job, it uses Change block tracking to, worth thinking about for your purposes, I have used SRM a few times an I've always used local Vcenter and SQL installed on the same server, I wouldnt want to do it without local Vcenter.

Yeah I'll just continue to use Veeam instead for now. Just wanted to see if I could unify and simplify the processes. I'll be doing SRM between the two main datacenters and Veeam replication from my remotes. I'm doing Veeam replicas over the WAN and it works well.
