Yup. The very one.

I used just that book (cover to cover in order, answered all the questions) and the Professer Messer videos. Was all I needed.

It has excellent reviews and I have a kindle. $10 can't beat that deal.

No matter what book you use, make sure you read up on the new performance based questions too. They aren't that difficult when you understand the content, but they have surprised a lot of people because CompTIA added them as a new question format after they released the exam objectives.

well now I never put one and one together with your name till now....

so many of my friends in the industry here in the Tri-state area of NYC have read your book and have all passed.

I think I'll order this book on Amazon now and keep it on the book shelf. I plan on taking the 3 MCSA:2008 exams next since they expire in 6 months and I want that cert badly. Once I'm done I'll take the Security +, plus I feel it will be helpful going into the CCENT direction...

Good luck on both the MCSA and Security+. Completing a test every two months is certainly achievable.

CompTIA hasn't announced any formal dates yet, but they are working on the next version of the Security+. It will probably go live in Spring or summer of 2014 but the current version will most likely still be available for at least six months after the new exam goes live.

Security + definitely sound appealing. I've got the book for the CSSP cert since we use Barracuda and Sonicwall heavily at my place of work and I've basically mastered the Barracuda but Sonicwall is a different story, if I screw something up on the 240 it can really break the network, lol! - so I sort of feel CSSP is needed as-well. This year and 2014 is going to busy for me now that I know as-long as I study and know the material I can pass exams, but it's only good to pass the exam if you can actually take something from it and use it in your place of work.

I know it seems I'm going to so many directs but IT is always constant, I suppose I have a high standard upon myself. I guess I'm curious if it gets to a point that you can have too many certifications? - like over-qualified?

what kind of job can you get with a security +?

Many DoD IT jobs require a minimum of a Security+. This includes working directly for the DoD or as a contractor.

CompTIA has this on their site: Security certification, CompTIA Security+ certification

"Candidate job roles include security architect, security engineer, security consultant/specialist, information assurance technician, security administrator, systems administrator, and network administrator. Organizations that employ CompTIA Security+ certified staff include Hitachi Information Systems (Japan), Trendmicro (Philippines), Lockheed Martin, the U.S. State Department, Prestariang Systems Sdn. Bhd. (Malaysia) and U.S. government contractors such as EDS, General Dynamics and Northrop Grumman. CompTIA Security+ is one of the options for certifications required by the U.S. Department of Defense, for military personnel or military contractors engaged in information assurance activities."

As Darril said a lot of DOD and defense contractors require just a Security+ and clearance, plus they have a lot of chances for additional training.

Darril: I am also using your book. Signed up for the exam this morning for testing on 27-Aug-2013. Also using the "Exam Cram" book and Professor Messer's videos, as well as CBT Nuggets. From what I have read on these forums, Mr Gibson's book ought to suffice for scaling the certification.

Darril, are the performance based objectives included in your book? If not, what do you recommend I study to familiarize myself with these objectives?

I've been reading Darril Gibson Sec + book and I have to contest the layout of the chapters and the way he explains them allows me to retain the information. There is hardly any worthless facts in the explanations and that makes for reading the book so much easier. I'm on Chapter 9 and I feel I know the material so much better. I bought a Exam Cram book that I will read afterwards and plus the tear-out ********** I like a great deal!

@ahigh45, Welcome to the forums. I missed your post so didn't respond right away but yes, the objectives are included in the book. CompTIA didn't change the objectives but they did add new performance based testing after they released the objectives. My blog site includes several blogs on the new performance based questions but in general, if you understand the concepts covered by the objectives, you can answer the questions no matter how they are presented. One thing I've been stressing to people lately is that if a question isn't clear, skip it and come back to it. Some people have spent way too much time on the performance based questions and then don't have enough time to complete the multiple choice questions.
