Some decent enhancements, and much greater in number than what they did with 5.1. Dont understand why they didnt club 5.1 along with 5.5, perhaps they didnt want to introduce too big a change in one hit or something. App HA, 62TB vmdk's, Windows 2012 clusters and the storage enhancements are interesting. My company was thinking of moving to 5.1 soon, now I think we'll hold off and go 5.5 instead (once the new version has been out a few months).

The new features look pretty cool but if they require purchasing new licenses, I don't think I'll be upgrading our servers.12 terrific new updates in VMware vSphere 5.5 - InfoWorld

5.1 is evil. Based on initial report they fixed most of the bad stuff in SSO in 5.5. Need to poke it for a while to see if it's worth upgrading.

When you compare the outcry between vRAM licensing vs. SSO, you get the sinking feeling that many vSphere admins don't know what they're doing.

SRM with no vCenter dependency if you can deal with their replication is nice. Now they need to allow me to use Snapmirror and my SRA and it will be perfect. No more Veeam replicas for my critical stuff in my remote sites.

From the uninitiated admins who work in small shops, what’s the big deal about 5.1 and SSO? I was thinking of migrating my environment from 5.1.0 799733 to 5.1.0 update 1 – Should I be worried about anything?

Last time I checked, VMware had ~80 KBs regarding 5.1 SSO.

Just to let you know that as this is a point upgrade there isn't a need for new licenses (or more precisely I have installed the RC and used a full product key and it licensed correctly).

If it were a full on version upgrade you would need to use a new key but as this is still a version 5.x then you're fine.

By the way, I'm going to take a VCP class in November or December and then sit for the exam. Which version will be tested?

At this time I would say 5.1 but always keep an eye on the exam blueprint as that will have the correct information.

As an aside I hope you're aware that the course is not enough to pass the exam, you will probably need to read some additional material (whitepapers, various VMware related books and loads of hands on experience).

At least read most, if not all available documentation. Read the white paper and relevant PDF. At least.
