Got my first Certification

I have been working in IT for well over a decade. Finished up a Masters in IT Management last year and decided I wasn't interested in a PHD. Certifications was the next logical step for professional development then. Since I would like to do contracting overseas and DOD has been requiring Security+, I decided to go for that. Figured with my work experience and education it shouldn't be too hard. The last month I have had every free moment with my head in a study guide or taking a practice exam. Today I passed the text with a 840/900 score. To top things off I had a $20 bet with a co-worker on who would get certified first, and I beat him.

Congrats! I started on my certs 15 years into my career as well. I just wish I would have started sooner, definitely and asset.

The plus side of starting with the college degrees is I will never have to renew them. Now I'm going to have to worry about continuing education credits and that stuff.

Your going to be getting more certs eventually, if you get Net+ or A+, that will renew your Sec+ (Don't quote me on that though). From what I have read, I would do some digging in CompTIA, but I know thats the answer.

Only higher certifications renew the certifications…so security+ would have renewed network+ and a+ but not the other way around. CASP, CISSP, any Cisco security certifications all renew. The website lists them all out for CompTIA.

OP, now if you want to get into management within the DoD, you need to go for the CISSP or at least CASP. Dept of Defense Directive: DoDD 8570

In case you're interested: I'm studying for the ISC2 - SSCP certification as an intermediate goal to finally getting the CISSP, and I've found that the Security+ material is practically the same as for the SSCP cert. I bet that with the high score you got for the Security+, you have pretty much covered and mastered enough SSCP material to challenge the exam.

So, again, I don't know if you're interested in going for other certifications, but if that's the case, I'd recommend going for the SSCP while the Sec+ material is still fresh. That's what I'd have done a year ago, if I had only known.

I also got certified using your Security+ guide, and I'm currently using your SSCP guide to prepare for the exam. I've found that the books are really well written and practical, just some minor typos here and there, but they are both great guides overall. Thank you!

@G. Hayduke. Thanks for the kind words. And you're correct, there is a lot of crossover on the Security+ and SSCP certs. If you have a good understanding of the topics, itsn't that far of a leap to the SSCP. Good luck with the SSCP.
