tips for promotion and general advancement within a company.

Hi,

Just curious if any senior folk on here could offer words of wisdom in terms of getting promotions/better salary within a company.
Can be any company i guess, what are the baselines/must do things that stand out in managements eyes. What did you improve or how
did you contribute to gey your promotion? Some people say dress well, others may say become friends with your boss etc etc.
How does one get noticed!

Arrive early, stay later if necessary, never watch the clock for quitting time. Volunteer for committees at work if available. Ask for honest feedback from supervisor, and heed what is said. Positive feedback is great, but constructive criticism can save the day. If your supervisor mentions something, take it with a smile and accept it as honest feedback, areas for improvement. Then begin taking corrective action to improve. When he / she sees your actions and enthusiasm, it will go a long way to getting noticed.

Making one's self promotable is not rocket science, honesty and the willingness to take the good with the bad is what makes one management material. As well, being a team player who is not afraid to take the lead shows incentive. If you have contributed to campaigns that have saved the company money, that always helps. Believe it or not, it is the small things that get noticed.

This is coming from someone who climbs the ladder at every institution I have been involved with. Always be a leader, not a follower.

I wouldn't say these are entirely necessary, especially coming in early (being in earlier then your boss is good and never be late!). The server team manager volunteers for a lot of committees to the detriment of his work and team.

What I would say is volunteer to do work that is outside of your normal job or expected tasks, especially if they are tasks that are considered more senior. Make your bosses life easier and his boss. Don't moan and try not to raise problems to your seniors without a solution (or suggested solution) but never dig your head in the sand if they need to be made aware of something. If you've fixed a big high profile solution before it's become a major issue then let them know.

Always volunteer for the high profile projects. Nothing gets you promoted faster than everyone in upper management knowing you just completed that major project that saved the company a million dollars.

Great advice from wgroom above.

I have climbed fairly quickly in every job. I use a two part method

1) Always be honest and do your best.

2) "I'm your man" Philosophy. If your boss needs someone to stay over after work to finish a project...I'm your man. If the boss needs someone to work Saturday...I'm your man. Need someone to work on the next major project...I'm your man. Need someone to explain technical aspects to our board...I'm your man. Need someone to learn SQL, coding, Cisco, Juniper etc...I'm your man.

Then when the new position opens....you guessed it...I'm your man.
