I'd be more focused on technology instead of a piece of paper. What do you think will be the next cutting edge technology?

Technology and certifications don't always have a 1:1 relationship so, while this is great advice, it is not applicable in every situation. Example, CISSP. It does not correlate to any particular piece of software but is considered a valuable, albeit waning, certification.

Yes, the next cutting edge technology is going to be software defined storage. And that's because of an explosion of machine created data (an Internet of Things). I highly recommend everyone look at this video. As it has ramifications on all sectors of IT.

The one at Dallas County CC... I've just started the EMCISA but they will have a more advanced one in the summer I believe (hopefully this is online and not in person).

@ Route - I am a BA and I work within a software development / business intelligence team. I am more technical however, I don't just design use cases and Visio diagrams.

I think the next hot technology will be all things Cloud. I spent time getting familiar with Amazon Web Services & it changed my perception of cloud computing completely.

Dont know if there's going to be a certification for it exclusively, but the next big thing is Software Defined Data Center. That's what they talk about at the VMUG's these days too. With so many infrastructure pain points (storage and networking to name a couple), it only makes sense that people are going to try to find a solution and the answer is SDDC. Learn about it guys!

I don't have a catchy buzz word for for this, but I predict that there will be an increased awareness of the fragility that we are building into our IT systems today. By constantly chasing efficiencies at the margin, systems become more and more complex and interdependent, and when they do fail, the failure is catastrophic and hard to recover from. There was a high profile data center failure in Sweden earlier this year. It started as a small fire, but ultimately exposed a bug in a storage system's firmware, and it kept several high profile companies offline for days. I'm sure that someone at that company thinks that it wasn't their fault, and that the storage company is to blame, but as you introduce more and more dependencies where a failure of a single piece of the puzzle is a disaster the chance of that happening increases as well. I don't know how long it will take, but at some point people will realize that you need to take these things into account and deliberately build robust systems, even if it isn't the fastest or the cheapest.

Doesn't the fragility of systems fall under security? C.I.A. - w/ the A meaning availability - includes identifying single points of failures, setting up pre-emptive measures, and hardening systems (even beyond just software).. doesn't it?

So I guess you think there'll be more importance placed on security?

Probably the PMP, Project Management is very popular. Things are getting started but they are never finished.

We have, but the technology is now being adopted by the mainstream (see the success of AWS). Cloud is like VoIP was in the 90s. It existed but there was little reason to learn it because it simply wasn't used. It usually takes tech 5 years to becoming "new" to the mainstream.

I would like to do the PMP, but it's structure and methodology doesn't seem to align with real world projects. If you are going to the moon or building a bridge across a large river the PMP makes sense, but in appdev and other infrastructure projects agile seems to be the real world project management style.
