Can someone explain to me what is a Secret LAN is? Yes, Secret.

    Need more context to answer - is it a LAN classified as Secret (like DoD)? where did you come across the term?

    Thanks. Just what I thought it is. A LAN with a secret classification.

    The government always amaze me. They put out so many regulation and standard, yet they are the one don't follow it.

    ? cw3k there is nothing wrong with having a vlan with secret as the description. Unless it's on an unclassified network then someone is going to get in trouble for that little mistake. But your most likely referring to a classified area (secret) which anything that has classified data or intends to have classified data on it is called at the minimum secret.

    The DOD has LANs that spans all levels unclassified to top secret. It mostly comes down to what is on the network and what crypto they are using to transmit data. And trust me, we follow a lot of regulations.

    Do you mean "SIPR" the classified network as opposed to "NIPR" the unclassified network.

    I started calling one of the LANs I manage "the Secret LAN" to identify it specifically (we only have one LAN that handles up to Secret). I'd guess that is what he's asking about.

    I have never heard of a Confidential LAN... My understanding is that Confidential would likely be subject to FOUO restrictions, and would be transfered over NIPRnet with restrictions.

    It can ride NIPRnet but anything can have a FOUO restriction. I can't remember their nickname for it was for Reactor.
