Job title?

I currently work as a Help Desk Specialist. However, this includes going out and doing all the things that the Field Technicians do, except without the title or the pay. There is a lot of little stuff that has happened as a result of this, me being expected to keep up with the jobs of both titles being the major problem. I also feel it look look better on my resume if I was given the title of what I actually do.

Should I be irritated? Should I ask for the title and the pay or request that I not be given work orders as if I was a tech? Am I making mountains out of molehills?

How long have you been "working both roles" ? If it has only been a short time may just want to cool your jets and odds are, you are the next up for a the higher level position. Only the other side of that coin they could be just abusing you and yes it may be time to move on if they have no plans of promoting you. Could always just go into your directs office and ask to for the promotion and site the work you have been doing...can't make an omelet without breaking an egg bro.

I've been doing this for about a year and a half now. I was originally in line for a promotion and then that was put on the back-burner until we expand further as a company, which doesn't really have an ETA. I've asked for the promotion since then and been given the same line.

Do you know what the HR requirements are for such a tittle? Most places have strict guidelines for things like that and can't just give tittles to people so freely.

I do. I qualified for them even when I was first hired. It was one of those situations where it was pushed that I would be upgraded to that title after some time. I took this with a grain of salt, as I know things change, but being saddled with the responsibilities of said job while not actually getting it was something that took me a bit by surprise.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the opportunity. At the same time, I feel like it is going to hurt me to continue like this in the long run.

Well all that being said it does kind of sound like they are giving you run around. Just update the old resume and starting floating it around...that's what I would do

I wouldn't be worried about the tittle affecting you in the future personally. They mean nothing in IT. Field Technician doesn't sound any better than Help Desk to me. I'd want to make sure my pay is inline with my duties though.

Seconded. Titles are entirely arbitrary. Ive been called for a Jr. Help desk position early in my career and they were actually looking for a sr. system admin. 5-7 years of experience with Server 2003 (at the time), Cisco firewall and switch experience, etc. I was like WTF?

Job titles are indeed meaning less. If you are worried about the keysearches of recruiter - simply put your actual job title in your resume / cv and in the details mention your other "job"

My duties include working as a Field Technician where I am blabla

But I agree - pay is more important than a title

They could call me monkey hairdresser if the pay is decent
