Is it a good start for IT career?

Hi all, I've been here for a while, absorbed a lot of great information from you guys while getting certs and looking for my first IT job. A big thank you to all of you.

Now I got an offer as support technician for a big computer component retailer. But I'm not sure it's a good start, because as what I understand level 1 should be like enterprise level? can I use this retailer experience to apply for level 2 technician in the future? In the meantime, I'm waiting for the confirmation from an IT Support company which provides an entry level position. But it's far away from my place which will be a torture for my old car. On the contrary the position at retailer shop is within walk distance. So any thoughts?

Getting your first opportunity is often the hardest part. If you can afford to take the job I would say go for it. Give it 6 months and start looking for more opportunities.

It will be alot easier to move into a more relevant job coming from this then from nothing.

Get your feet wet and start analyzing your position, salary, experience, and goals at around 6 months. Don't leave your job before then is best to complete at least 1 year. Once ready to leave make sure you do everything professional like 2 week letter, and so on just so you don't burn any bridges and possible reference. The beginning is always the hardest but after that with education, experience and time under your belt. It will be much easier to move around job. Gluck! and Congrats!

What is the job description for the retail job? It's at least better than nothing working around the technology. Hard to say what your duties are based on just the job title though.

I've been working for almost two weeks. The job is about PC hardware and OS installation, pc problems- resolving, dealing with customers who bought from us. Nothing about MCSA, even Network+. I'm starting to forget WSUS, branchcache...Really don't think it will help, but at least it will help pay the bills, sigh...

Good thing about that is you can embellish a little on your resume to make it sound more IT than it really is. I'd try after 3-6 months and I'd be surprised if you couldn't get a much better job that is much more IT related.

Thanks, you are right. I will try to get more certs after three months and start to find a better job after six months. I just made this decision because this place sucks. Nobody likes to talk to you and anything I say will end with silence. The work place is always a mess and all of sudden my boss start to blame me to be the reason of this mess in front of the big boss. It's tough, but I will survive.

And surprisingly, nobody has a plan to train me. All I'm doing is based on my previous experience and observation. To be fair, one guy is training me for some stuff, but it's very limited to his job, totally not enough for what I will need to do. So I'm soooo confused and feeling weird about the situation.
