Start by familiarizing yourself with the OS itself. If you have zero networking experience it would help to read up on some general networking ideas too. Things like subnetting, layer 2 vs layer 3 networking, VPN protocols and ports used by those protocols.

i started to read network infrastructure by Jc mackin and tony northrup which i find is detailed and covers the basic
