where to go on from here? In my career

Hello guys,

I been working on IT 5 and half years to be exact.
Almost 6 years.

I have been a generalist for almost 4 years doing server/desktop and networking and almost 2 years as a 0365 / messaging and identity and access management specialist.

I'm on 80k with over time and bonuses.

I been in my new role for 5 months and looking at getting out as it is not what I was promised and its a huge backwards step compared to my last one.

I have IT certs Microsoft ones in server 2008 and vista so its a tad old and haven't passed a exam since almost 6 years.

The last one I attempted 4 years ago I failed but is not keen to do more certs even though it's good as I am experienced and have a good foundation.

What would be an ideal next step for me cause I'm bored and sick of doing the same crap every time though money is good.

In my last job I was a consultant and did big projects from design to implementation as well as consultancy for organisations IT pros on 0365 and how they can migrate from exchange on premise to cloud as well as integration work with adfs and FIM

I loved it and was really good at it but I hated the management and left and I got paid only 60k and now I make 80k but I'm back to a support engineering job and all I do is support cases of dum end users, server support, network support which was what I did in my first 3 years of IT.

I'm cool with the team and management and workers but there r so many ppl with egos but I don't let that bother me.

I wanna get back to a role like that with the current pay but haven't done that level or kind of work in 8 months

Any ideas

80k is good money, but that is including your OT and bonuses. I will take a bonus, but I'm not crazy about them. They just bump up your W2, and by the time the taxes hit it, you get about half.

OT is great, I work it all the time, but it's like a drug. You do a little and get a big paycheck, then that becomes a habit, and then you get used to working all that OT. Then you get dependent on your OT money. THen you look up and realized you worked so much you are missing out on the nonwork things in life.

Try to find a new job, doing what you want to do, with potential to grow, getting paid more than your current base, and that's a win

Trying to get my current salary and a job where they let you learn on the job is rare.

In my area 45k is average so 80k is cuz of my experience.

None especially in private firms pay you to learn

I'm looking at a company where I can apply what I know and grow.

What's the market like in your area? Any other consulting jobs there? Go for that, if that's what you like. Sell yourself as an O365 expert, learn more as you are on the job.

My last two places I was salary and still got OT

Current role doesn't offer OT but applicable Flex rates. Aka over 40 hrs o get time and a half flex. So every hour extra I work I get 1.5 hrs vacation.

So you like SysAdmin work? Ideally, you need to ask yourself what do you want to do, and where do you see yourself in the next few years. Make yourself a wish list, and what would you like to be doing, or what field you really want to get in.

If you are going after it just for the money, then you are doing it for the wrong reasons.

my new job will be similar, all OT type work will be repaid in time off
