Server 2012 R2 Lab Setup

Hey guys,

I'm just looking for some quick help settings up a 2012 sever lab.

I copied this set up:

I'm having trouble setting up my vm's in VMware,so they point to a virtual switch.
The only Virtual switch I have tried so far is a VM of PF Sense. -With no luck
The VMS have no roles or updates yet.

Now I followed these steps in the video below and everything worked in Virtual Box using PF Sense.

If you did use this setup or a similar one, then how did you get virtual switches to work inside VM Ware Player? Did you use PF Sense?

whats the point of the PF sense box in your lab?

You do not need a PF sense box to get basic networking in your lab.

You should be able to create a Virtual switch in VMworkstation, assign a real world NIC on the host to it. Then you connect the virtual nic on the VM to the Virtual switch in the VM settings. That is all you should have to do.

But you'll want to use multiple VLANs if you're going to play with clustering which you will if you're doing these exams.

I used Hyper V and Untangle in my lab so I can't answer the question, all I did was configure the networks in Untangle then create additional virtual switches in Hyper V.

I'm sure others on here who are using VMWare and PFSense will be able to help.

Basically the lab setup has all the VMs on one vmNet, I usually use vmNet4 and leave it as host only. A couple of things to think about when creating a VM lab is: rarely outside of WSUS do you need Internet connectivity to the VMs and never Windows Update the VMs. All of the test questions are point in time at the release of the version, currently the tests are for 2012 R2. The only thing you would need pfSense for would be a lab like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYDzS8ijXfY, where you need multiple subnets (layer 3 routing). As for the Hyper-V labs... Yes, you need multiple VLANs... However No, you do not need them routable. Microsoft's defacto answer for labs is if you need a router, use RRAS (Routing and Remote Access Services). However, that's a little over the top when you need basic routing and NAT.
