Yea, I've lived in Florida, and well... I'm not there now! What about the Atlanta market? I keep hearing that it's HOT HOT HOT, but I'm having trouble breaking into a Sysadmin position.

Northwest Florida is tough... if you arent a senior engineer or entry level you are hosed. Mid - level jobs are far and few between. And if you dont have a Top Secret clearance, might as well move.

With respects to Florida, Tampa, then Jacksonville, are the only two markets to even consider. I've had zero issues advancing my career here in Florida in those two markets. Now I will say that overall salaries are not as high as I've been seeing in DFW, DMV, or Atlanta.

Very interesting seeing Chicago make the list around 50 and Sheboygan Wisconsin at 100. Nothing against Sheboygan but most people wouldn't have a clue as to where its at in the first place.

Chicago basically suffers from it burdensome tax base. Cook county now has an 11.5 percent sales tax and will be no where close to meeting its obligations for the year, let alone long term. Say hi to Detroit on the way down! Yikes!

Someday I'll move back to Michigan. Probably about the time to retire, LOL.

I have been in Raleigh, NC for a couple of years, very affordable and a lot of Networking and Security Jobs here.

Plenty of jobs. like I said in the Wash/Balt/Va areas, but not affordable.

As far as I can tell the "TOP" 5 cities for Tech are:

1. Washington, DC
2. Dallas, TX
3. Denver, CO
4. Atlanta, GA
5. Houston, TX

This is my opinion based on job search engine results and also best cost of living. DC is an exception for cost of living, then again you can commute from north virginia.

These cities pay very well, almost as good as it gets and yet the cost of living is so much lower they are almost no-brainers.

I myself am contemplating ATL in the future, my wife being an Epidemiologist makes it an easy choice to make as ATL is CDC HQ and the largest sector for Public Health jobs.

Sorry, I meant DC is an exception to the first opinion that all cities in my list have low COL.
You are correct DC is high indeed, but many in IT commute from less expensive areas in north Virginia to compensate. I probably wouldn't do it, but the sheer amount of jobs rivals cities in California and that's why it made my list.

Based on research, it seems that the cost of rent and housing in the Denver area is pretty outrageous. Anyone care to comment?

It's not in South Aurora and Centennial. If you work in Denver or DTC (tech center) it's a very short commute too. Probably in the DTC or Littleton might be a little expensive but otherwise housing is decent.

A recruiter recently told me the unemployment rate for IT professionals in Minneapolis is less than .5%. Plus, super affordable to live here!

Based on personal experience, the DC/NoVA area is pretty much comparable in COL to the NY Metro area.

I agree with you about the traffic.
I was working in NoVA using commuter line from MD, Metro to and from Tysons.
Round trip daily you might as well say 6 hours.

But there are a lot of Beltway bandits on the MD and VA side with contracts, lots of Clearance requirements.

I have had no issues finding jobs in Seattle in the past. If your ex-military or have a clearance I would say DC is going to be about your top place for IT jobs.

I just moved to Fort Collins which is an hour north of Denver. The average rent here is 1200 a month. It only gets worse in Denver.
