Scott's obviously a smart and accomplished guy, and a good guy too, but keep in mind that certifications are basically his job. There is no way somebody with a job that is as demanding as is typical in this industry would have all those certs. And I personally would be suspicious of someone who claimed to me to have a regular day job and yet presented all those certs. Aim for a few key ones and spend the rest of your time on finding good jobs and working hard at them.

When he had build his own company, I was still watching cartoons lol. Damn that's a lot of experience. Does he have to follow the 2-3 years of renewing the certificates or does those rules don't apply to him?

He surely does get the CPEs.

Certifications actually aren't my job. They are merely an extension thereof. Working for partners, ya kinda have to have them (they like them, and pay for exams). Working as a trainer, ya kinda have to have them since it's what you are teaching about. However, certifications are merely a demonstration of things you either do or do not know. They have always followed work that I've done, never been the leading part.

So everything I have a certification for, I actually DO work with. Obviously not all at the same time (especially the older things!), but I'm working with several different contractors right now on multiple projects. Many are time-consuming, but not always "full-time" each which allows me to balance. But whether it's network design, diving into Juniper SRX security configs, working through Brocade VDX fabric data centers or Juniper QFX data centers or working on Palo Alto firewall installs, I can assure you that I have demanding jobs and utilize many of the skills.

(Many other things have been recent, but not currently what I'm doing from day to day)

However, at the same time, I would encourage folks to follow what you said. Aim for what makes sense to you. If you work in the R&S space, THAT is your first focus. If you work with Juniper gear, then the JNCIS-ENT, JNCIP-NET and/or JNCIE-ENT are your things to aim for.

Also bear in mind that my list of certifications represents a good 16+ years of gaining them (first CCIE in 1999). So if you are just starting out, you have a LONG time to think about catching up!

Do I have a "regular" day job? I would like to think not. But there's also a lot of time that goes into preparing for any certification. If you do it RIGHT though, your regular work can lead you toward your certifications. Remember they are simply a test of what you do or do not know. Lead with work, study and gaining knowledge. Follow with certifications. You'll always find value then, and you'll never give people a reason to be suspicious of whatever quantity of certifications that you have.

Now, as you noted, you have two CCIEs and a JNCIE. Did you do those while you still had a "regular day job"?

Yeah, unfortunately I still have to follow the recertification guidelines. Definitely can be a pain! Some vendors rules are better than others, but it's all part of the game! Besides, it's good to force me to keep the skills up. If it's something worth listing as experience, then it's something worth spending time on to recertify!

But yea, when it comes to things like the CISSP, it's no problem finding a TON of things to list for CPE.

The lab has not gone away. It's evolved a bit. Got more virtualized stuff now, and other items such as Palo Alto, Brocade and F5 in it that weren't there before... But it's still all sorts of fun and kinda messy at times!

Heh. Yeah, he added me on Linkedin and Twitter some time ago. I didn't know who he was until one of my friends told me to Google him. All I can say is WOW. I thought he was a parody at first. :P

Jeez Scott, I don't even want to know how much that entire lab came to a $$ total of (My current CCNA lab + rack came to about $600 CDN). All of that hardware made me look at my lab in shame.

That is incredible! I go year after year achieving bugger all, so god knows how one can achieve all that. You must be like that robot in that film who scans through a book in 5 seconds (can't remember the name of film, Short Circuit it may be?). Your electric bill must be pretty big.
