Identical Processor Limitations On VMWare Hosts

Hello Everyone

Is this still a thing? I couldn't confirm it one way or another. Perhaps a better phrasing would be "What are the practical limitations of having different processors in vSphere hosts?" There, that sounds plenty technical.

Among same vendor or different vendor?

If same vendor, HA will work, but vMotion won't unless EVC is enabled.

If different vendor, HA will work, but vMotion won't.

It is very much so a thing ... Even if you buy two seemingly identical CPUs, there still might be differences in steppings and you will end up with an incompatibility which is enough to make vmotion impossible. I had two 56xx CPUs here which have the exact same writing on it but when using certain tools it turns out that some instruction sets are different. Based on Intel one of the CPUs had a "service pack" which added some additional features.

We had to return both CPUs and buy a "matched pair" ..

Oh and in our case EVC didn't even work...

Did you EVC it to a lower level?

Thanks for the responses guys. So if we have a mix of host processors, how do you move a vm from one host to a host with a different type of processor?
