issues with 2511

livenliven Member Posts: 918
My 2511 is hanging on the bootup....

When it gets to a line something like:

router undergoing cold start up ( or something like snmp agent undergoing cold start)....

I am not seeing any other errors... But I can't break into rommon mode...

I just want the darn thing to work, any suggestions?

If you're letting it get to that point, you missed your chance to hit Rommon mode.

Power cycle the router and send the break sequence as soon as you see something appear

    Just reread that -

Are you saying that it hangs after IOS starts, and that you're unable to break into rommon at all, or youre unable to break into rommon after it shows that?

My first suspect is your terminal settings, make sure they're correct.

Post a log. You sure it is hanging?

Terminal settings are correct, I am sure of that.....

I can't get into Rommon mode at all.... I have tried sending a break every way I can think of. Used both hyper terminal and tera term.

I am pretty sure, I have let the darn thing boot for 30 minutes, and I can't console into it... Just keep getting the same non response....

well I know it is not my computer, console cables or hyper terminal setup.

I can connect to other routers and switches without any problems...

But I can not console into my 2511... I can not break into Rommon...

The router boots, and I can see it go through the boot up sequence... but then int hangs....

    It's most likely the Flash.

I have two other 2500 (not sure what the exact model is but they are not 2511), can I take the flash out of one of them and put it in my 2511?

Yes. Give this a try and look at the boot up process. If it loads the IOS with no problem and boots up normally then the flash was the issue.

Yes I used it alot for the BCMSN test because that test is very difficult to study for with dynamips.

I fired it up a few days ago to work on a few labs that is needed a switch (more than dynamips could provide), and it just hangs.

ok I tried two different sets of Flash memory.....

I can get into Rommon now, but I can't get past the interfaces comming up.

I will post the boot info in another post.

Boot into rommon and change your config register to 0x42 using the command o/r0x42 and then reboot again. This will bypass your NVRAM and ignore your startup configuration because you are running 12.0 IOS and in your startup configuration you have version 12.3 commands which might possibly be hanging it up. Try this and let's see what happens.

Ok I change the confreg and was able to get into the boot image....

Looks like a bad image file:

    Router(boot)#show flash ALL

    System flash directory:
    File Length Name/status
    addr fcksum ccksum
    1 11095548 c2500-c-l.123-22.bin [invalid checksum]
    0x40 0x5383 0xFDD4
    [11095612 bytes used, 5681604 available, 16777216 total]

I will wax it and load something fresh and see if that helps.

Well thanks everyone for their help.

Turns out rolling back (way back 11.0(22a)) the IOS fixed the issue.

So if I can get by with that fine if not I will try a new IOS and see what happens...

    ah the joys of hardware!!!

Something is still broken. It shouldn't corrupt IOS on flash by itself.

What do you think it could be?

I know these devices are more stable than a typical computer, however I would imagine it is possible for this (software corruption) to happen from time to time. Keeping in mind the device is pretty old....

    Any suggestions would be appreciated!

The file usually gets corrupted during transfer. If it was working before and then suddenly became corrupted it could be bad flash.

Yes it was working for a while. However I had not used for some time and it was powered down. I am ready to start using it again and it hangs during boot.

I have some extra flash so I will put some new flash in there and see what happens.

    Thanks gentlemen.
