Re: Should I quit and get my masters? Would you? ***UPDATED***
No, I wouldn't quit, I would apply to a place like DSU where I believe the whole masters is 9k. Its all about opportunity cost. Your opportunity cost of 97.5k lost versus a 9k degree (DSU) and a 36k stipend at (2k per month 18 moths), the math doesn't work out. Keep the experience of working, get your degree through a… -
Re: just got AAS, best BS (WGU) route to pentesting?
Thanks the_Grinch, this is kind of what I was expecting but wanted to make sure before I set anything in stone. edit: just read that article you provided, very good stuff, thank you so much for that! My plan was and I guess still is to: (all-the-while studying programming: C*, perl, python, php, etc, and getting better… -
Re: How can i expand my CISSP domains experience
Here is wat i have done. I am quite weak on vulnerabilty scanning and pen testing so started looking for CEH course training. Everyone asked for astronomical prices. So i broke it down by searching for specific topics, exampke metasploit, kali linux, nessus etc and found tonnes of videos of actual labs on youtube and… -
Re: Why do so many people seem to want to go into security work?
I didn't choose security, security chose me But seriously I was doing security work before it was the cool thing, and before I really knew what security was. At my first IT job in 2005 I was a JOAT and that included IAM, firewall, etc. After that job I was working second level desktop support at a global finance firm and… -
Re: I've cleared my security +, what after this?
Sorry to hear about lay off. At this point you have a couple options. Pentesting: CEH, OSCP, Gpen, and ECPPT General security: Gsec, SSCP, CISSP All of these will be somewhat expensive to study for and take to really expensive to study for and take. All the Giac certs are very expensive but higly regarded in the info sec… -
Re: Juniper bug has bitten me
Well a month and 1/2 ago I sat for the CCNA Security Exam and failed the exam by 5 points. I was considering either resitting for the exam a second time or shifting gears and going for the Juniper exam. We'll I was going to resit the CCNA Security exam until a few of the Network Senior Engineers noticed that I just passed… -
Re: Cheap VMWare course?
Exactly. Yes, or put it on a CC as a last resort. That really isn't that much money to recouperate. If you're not going to get a large enough bump in pay to justify that, why is it worth it to you? As noted earlier, you can still get plenty of experience and education without the course and certification. If you're a solid… -
Re: Bl8ckr0uter's Security+ trek
Oh nah. Like 9 months ago, I was trying to study for the A+ - Sec+ and CCENT - CCNA Sec as well as some CEH stuff at the same time. I realized very quickly I need to slow things down; the good part about that is that all of it is rooted in my head now so when I go back to my notes and vids, I just have to glance over them… -
Re: Doing as much as I can possible?
I wouldn't suggest doing all those certs and having basically 0 real world experience and trying to jump into the job market. The downtime at your current job is great because it will allow you to study but you're not factoring in the experience and skills you will earn at a more challenging professional job. I suggest you… -
Re: The appeal of pentesting
I would like to be a security analyst and would like to have pen testing skills so I guess I can sort of respond. For me I think that for most people, they look at various movies or hear about network breaches and think "Man that is f'n sexy and cool." I think that it is sort of like how everyone wants to be a quarterback…
