Re: Did you make the same or less when going from contract to perm?
I'm in that boat. Basically, your actual employer (CDI in my case) pays the employer side of your taxes. It's 7.65% of your earnings. If you were on a 1099, you'd be paying the self employment tax which includes that 7.65% extra. As with any job, the social security and medicare taxes you see withheld from your paycheck… -

Re: White House releases Federal Cybersecurity Workforce Strategy
Grinch - Yeah they love throwing $ at contracts so they don't have to pay for retirements down the road. I had a job offer at the top end of the GS-12 pay scale, and was going to scan the network for vulnerabilities and monitor their in house web proxy for sites to block. Glad I didn't take that, because there was no room… -
Re: Why we need both IP and MAC addresses?
I'm no Security professional, but I used to spoof MAC addresses for people in college so they could hook their video game systems to the Internet. Freshmen and sophomore year it was only allowed to connect one computer per student. You also had a bandwidth limit. I'd show students how to spoof the MAC addresses so that… -
Re: Sales-Oriented Call Center
A couple things to note. You do not need any certs to get an entry level help desk gig. There are probably hundreds if not thousands of members on this forum who got their foot in the door of IT without certs/traditional educations prior to. I landed my first IT related job just because I was passionate about computers in… -
Re: Teaming up to build an information system?
One idea. I've noticed that so much of today's financial info systems are based on day-trading philosophy. For those that trade long-term, based on fundamental analysis, there isn't a good system that focuses on balance sheets to make a judgment on the health of a company. Some values, such as historical P/E values, are… -
Re: Obnoxious job interviewers
Well, Brady's an excellent example of the kind of person we like. Brady got drafted, what, 199th I think it was? Started out at 4th on the depth chart, worked his way up to 2nd, and then stole Bledsoe's job. He's never rested on his laurels or gone into prima donna mode. Hell, he restructured his own contract so that they… -
Re: ISC2 volunteer opportunity
You need to already have the cert for the study materials you will be writing (SSCP, CISSP, CAP, CSSLP, etc). To pass the vetting, you should be a verified Subject Matter Expert in one or more of the domains, or an instructor of (ISC)2 materials, and an (ISC)2 member in good standing. If there are more volunteers than… -
Re: Best Buy Rant
Get use to it. You think companies get to where they are using honesty? While I dislike Geek squad and many repair businesses, you have to realize that they(like every company) are just trying to make money. These days you can buy cheap computers for $200-300... so many clients would just buy a new computer rather than… -
Re: whats a good investment??
If you want a sweet gun right off the bat look at a semicustom to full custom 1911. Really depends on what $$$ you have to spend. I have a Springfield TRP which ran about $1480 after tax and I love it. In my opinion 1911's are the best guns out there depending on the brand you buy. I also have a Springfield EMP as my…
