Re: Advice request on getting into InfoSec Pen Testing..
I think you're on the right track. If I were you, I'd focus on getting the CCNA, CCNA:S, and Security+, and then try to land a gig where you make use of that knowledge. The NOC knowledge certainly isn't going to hurt you. The more you know about TCP/IP, the better, IMO. I'm actually reading Routing TCP/IP Vol 1 and TCP/IP… -
Re: When too Many Certifications Start to Hurt You
This may be more true in the past compared to today. Most exams including the new Network+ and Security+ require some tasks that have to be performed at a command line or diagramed out. This depends on multiple factors such as: What you want to do in IT and where you are currently in your career: This could be a Desktop… -
Re: Explain to me the disrespect I see many tech people show to college degrees
Funny thing is, less than 15% of BBA, BSA, BBAA, actually keep their jobs after 90 days. Engineers? Less than 20% are able to keep careers as engineers. I had a Ph.D in Engineering dude unloading trucks with me at Walmart. Funny and amazing thing about Walmart is the sheer volume of degree holders of bachelors and higher… -
Re: Passed today. N10-05
The practice exams included in Mike Myers - All in One were pretty spot on. The questions on the real exam are never worded "What is the max length of the XXX standard?" it's more like "Jimbo is a network admin, he needs to run cable XXXmeters. Which of the following standards would be BEST?" For the exam (and future real… -
Re: System Administrator vs IT security
Those jobs will be location specific. Depends on the size and type of corporations that exist. The very nature of infosec does require someone onsite to be security minded but that can also be outsourced. I can imagine, for example, a bunch of small local banks outsourcing their infosec duties to a single company. That one… -
Re: It's my time: Mrock's CCIE thread
Yeah, CISSP is not a real technical cert except for maybe the telecommunication, environmental systems and a few other topics. I'm just blown away by the reverence for it. The best description is a test that tests the person on management or best-for-business decisions. But it's a grueling test. Probably the worst test… -
Re: 6 Figure IT: Fundamentals (free vid)
Unfortunately, just breaking into six-figures isn't what it used to be (thanks fiat currency!). I officially broke six-figures this year, which is actually very good number for my local market. However, I remember folks getting six-figure jobs in this market when I was new to IT. For me, I have stayed wide in my skillset.… -
Re: OPST, OPSA, CISM ... Nearing the end of the road...
I debated on opening up my own business, but alas the politics of quarterly taxes, benefits, etc., made me nauseous... I debated about teaching but I have an inkling of dealing with certain companies. For example, a good friend of mine rivals Keatron and Scott Morris in the certs and knowledge arena and he tried to push me… -
Re: The Dilemma
So, if you put this in red team/blue team perspective, a role in networking or system administration might lead quite natural into network defence and blue team type things. This might then lead to the red team, pentesting type things. You could also short cut this process and go more directly to pen testing. If you go the… -
MSCSIA in 335 Days! (Long Read)
[FONT=&]**I posted this already on the WGU subreddit and I figured to post it here as well** First, sorry for the long post. I have recovered from the larger-than-life hangover I had this morning and I decided to post my experience on WGU’s MSCSIA program, but first some background information. I am currently in the…
