Re: What's your take on how long you should stay at a job?
Early in my career, I changed jobs more frequently. This was really a result of the state of the economy and my education/experience level at the time... essentially, I was new and uneducated and start-ups were everywhere. I didn't stay at a job longer than a year during my first four years. Then, I found my first "career"… -
Re: WireShark WCNA - Anyone pursuing or got this?
I plan to take this exam. Sometime in June or say (after I finish the elearnsecurity course). I think the exam will be "worth it" for a few reasons: 1: Almost every JR Network Engineer/Analyst and JR Networks Security Analyst/Engineer position in my area mentions "wireshark" AND "packet capture" 2: Many of them don't even… -
Re: Advice request on getting into InfoSec Pen Testing..
I think you're on the right track. If I were you, I'd focus on getting the CCNA, CCNA:S, and Security+, and then try to land a gig where you make use of that knowledge. The NOC knowledge certainly isn't going to hurt you. The more you know about TCP/IP, the better, IMO. I'm actually reading Routing TCP/IP Vol 1 and TCP/IP… -
Re: GCED Certification?
Hi docrice, Let me try and take a stab at your questions: I'm actually curious about SEC501 from the other direction - if one has already gone through 503 and 504, is there a benefit to taking 501? This is probably not a question you can answer, but I'm hoping someone out there who has gone through these three courses can.… -
Re: How did you end up in IT? I came in from ...(aka my journey)
My story starts when I was very young. Like a lot of people I started my interest via computer games (Starcraft FTW). I remember my first PC, a Packard Bell with 95 on it. I would spend HOURS just going through and clicking random things (I was probably around 10 at this time). My first troubleshooting experience was… -
Re: I decided to go for the CCNA instead of Red Hat certs..
I hear that the TrainSignal videos are very good, and are rumored to cover lots of details (these are Chris Bryant videos, correct?) but ...not too sure you're going about it the way I would. That is to say, I like to read things for myself, and not necessarily trust a video to be the complete story. Also, seeing the same… -
Re: Temporary Leave from IT for more money.
4 years ago, I had a similar choice to make. I don't know how much you are making now or how much you want to be making, but let me tell you about myself. 18 months ago, I was making $11/hr, working the graveyard shift, 32 hours a week. If you do the math, that's less than $19k a year. Ouch. I decided to improve myself and… -
Re: CEH practice
Yes no yes no yes no... Here are books I recommend you read for the sake of learning and understanding "hacking" (if we resume calling it so) Hacking Exposed 5th Edition, Counter Hack Reloaded, Hacker's Challenge (Mike Schiffman), Stealing the Network: How to Own the Box... Stay away from CEH: Official Certified Ethical… -
Re: Approach to certifications
I'm guilty of being a cert warrior - I've obtained all mine in a fair short amount of time. However, in my defense, I know the route I want to go (DoD Contractor) and I need these certs in order to even be considered, amongst other things. I have about 6+ years IT, 3 of which were Help Desk, and I have strived to learn… -
Re: Getting Started in InfoSec
I started my infosec experience in my country (Singapore) without any IT Experience, Degree and Certifications. I started at a Security Operation Analyst in a Managed Security Service Security Operation Center (MSS-SOC). The analysts in the SOC are all being outsource to a external contractor, so the main company gets to…
