Re: Application Security
I had to get used to paying a lot more than $30K broken out over 10 years (don't forget the interest). It was easy to get a student loan through SallieMae, but she's a harsh mistress on the payback. But, like any financing, the more you can pay each month the more interest you save in the long run. The Security+ is the… -
Re: What should I do next
Server+ isn't a bad thing, nor is it a waste of time. However, I think that Security+, along with MCSA/MCSE would probably be a better way to prioritize your time. Security+ has done wonders for my resume, and it's very handy to have as an elective for MCSA/MCSE. From what you're describing, you're looking to step up from… -

Re: SANS Boston 2014 - Workstudy
I completed the workstudy just last week and wanted to share my feedback regarding the program. Firstly the work that you need to put in is WELL worth the discount you get. I would highly recommend this program to anyone that is trying to challange a GIAC cert or anyone who is willing to pay out of pocket. The first day… -
Re: Moving away from Information Security Administration.
I was in your exact position. I did straight Identity & Access Management, security admin work for a large bank for almost 6 years. The last 3 years of that was only because I was stuck and couldn't get out to other security roles, as you are facing now. It's tough as hell to get that chance without being 100% on your game… -
Re: New Face / My Situation
abyssinica, Every comment I've seen you make so far have been unhelpful and unnecessary... Lets also not take advice from someone who is a 'Wannabe'. I wouldn't have joined these forums if I wanted advice from Wannabes. Also lets see your sources to these claims you make. When you say a lot of people his age have MCSEs or… -
Re: Passed 6/17
Hey. Congratulations!!! you have done it. Thanks for sharing your experience. Iam going to give CISSP exam on 28/06/2014, Saturday. I solicit valuable comments/guidance for final exam. My study plan: Material Used: 1. CBK 3rd Ed. (studied once) 2. Shon Harris AIO 6th Ed. (studied once) 3. Eric Conrad study guide (my… -
Re: Noob with a question
I would at 55 you are going to need to enjoy what you are doing. If you aren't using computing in a technical capacity you are likely to find there is a lot more to learn than you are expecting. This comes from not knowing what you don't know. I'm not trying to dissuade you from this path, but as a friendly suggestion to… -
Re: Pay it forward - Which resource for which domain
I recommend you first read Eric Conrad. I read Shon Harris book first and found it a bit verbose. The CBK was excruciating to read I felt it real dry. I got Conrad's later and wished I started with that one so I could have skimmed over the others. What helped me the most was doing a couple of practice tests, hear the audio… -
Re: part-time after hours jobs
Not wanting to leave my job yet. There are only a handful of jobs within 50 miles of me (literally) and any job I take would be at least an hour commute. I currently work from home and would like to try to ride this out as long as I can. Hoping to find something local or remote a few days a week in the meantime. Even with…
