Re: Help me fill gap between OSCP Labs and Exam
Which field, IT or security? When I was working in my previous industry I knew literally nothing but heard CCNA was desirable and obtainable, so I went for that. Afterwards I went for MCSA, for pretty much the same reasons. Once I started getting into Security my priorities started being dictated by my job duties. I was… -
Re: Do Certifications really mean you know your stuff?
I'll add to this sentiment with an anecdote: Several years ago I had just started a Tier 3 Infrastructure job at a local government and was working a ticket for a person that had CISSP in their Outlook signature. I asked her to get me her IP so I could troubleshoot something and there's a pause on the phone "Um, I don't… -

Re: linux
There are certainly specific reasons I use specifc live CD's. And as far as Backtrak and Whoppix being the combo of auditor and whoppix I am quite aware, however I wouldn't say it's like saying VW and volkswagon. Kinda like saying Windows 2000 and Windows XP or more like saying AVG and ewido (which is now a merge). As with… -
Re: InfoSec CCENT/CCNA Bootcamp
Hey pudgy, thanks for the honest feedback! Sorry the teaching style didn't match your learning style, but I'm glad that didn't discourage you from pressing on. I just sat in on the Security+ boot camp last week, and I totally get where you're coming from. I'm someone who can sit through hours of slides and lectures, and my… -
Re: GIAC Certs
When I was starting out a while ago, I was all about getting GIAC certs and thinking they were the way to the promise land. In reality, I haven't had one recruiter contact me regarding my SANS certs but maybe they will if I get a more advanced SANS cert. I have a different view of them now, after taking 3 courses. I think… -
Re: CCSP - Failed TWICE. I'm done.
You are close. If you quit, then the IT industry is not for you. These tests are designed to challenge you and make you think. If you believe you were suppose to pass by memorizing questions, you are not understanding the nature of the exam or the everyday challaneges of the IT industry. Check out my history....its filled… -
Re: GCIA or CISA/GSNA training?
I don't have GSNA yet so I cannot comment, but GIAC is always focus more on hands on, this applies even for the GSLC course the Security Managers need to know several hands on stuff as well. I believe the same goes for GSNA that you will learn quite a fair share of hands on in technical auditing. CISA on the other hand… -
Re: In a bit of a predicament...
Well I guess the verdict is unanimous. I'll worry about the 401. I always complicate things and also have a Java programming course I'm required to take and I can't program to save my life. I can memorize syntax in a day but come time to write a program I freeze up. But that's neither here nor there. I'll focus on… -
Re: Masters vs certificate program vs selfstudy: Cannot decide?
Ah, the often forgotten question of "what do you actually want to do?" Why is security interesting? What part? Just saying it's a growing field isn't going to help you with any kind of desire to learn a field that changes daily sometimes. To give you an idea why every once in awhile people ask this too often ignored…
